Don't get mislead dsister.
Icyedge has his misinterpreted the sequence of postingfacts.
1. geohot did NOT release a custom firmware
2. geohot DID release the tools needed to make a custom firmware
There is a massive difference in the eyes of the law on this!
Further, the custom firmware that an end user creates using HIS tools containg no Sony code whatsoever had added features to PREVENT piracy. geohot is one of the worlds top hackers, the code he added to prevent piracy was some serious heavy duty stuff. It took the hacking community 2 weeks to open it up. Which is a long time considering the code was all there available to view as the tools neccasary to decrypt Sony firmware were already available.
It's a shame some members here can't differentiate, or more embarrasingly...understand!!! what has been happening here. Not a dig at you dsister, but it seems you were too trusting of Icyedge who got the wrong idea and decided to form a post with incorrect information that is actually all available in the thread.

That's fine, just please understand that what I'm worried about is if Sony's indeed incapable of solving this issue. Now you argue that it's Sony's fault for leaving a flaw in the system's security. If geohot was the good guy he claims to be (which, based on his history, is debatable), he would NOT put such a system breaking code in the hands of the wrong people. That is why I'm not supporting him. I honestly have no company or console allegiance. I'll just play and prefer the console that provides me the most entertainment. Edit: Damn, no offense to some people here, but this thread turned into a spinfest. |
So basically you're saying that you're selfish and don't care about what's right and wrong, fair and just...it's all about you and you "getting your playstation".
That's what your post sounds like.
Seems to be a common theme amongst the PS3 fanboys ;)
1. You're not supporting him because what he's doing could potentially ruin your gaming experience.
2. You're judging as being a bad person for releasing something that could potentially ruin your gaming experience.
The problem here is that you're not just "not supporting him", you are actively speaking out against him! Don't you think the time for fanboy tomfoolery is over and some of you people here need to smack yourself round the face with a fish and relise this is more than...
"I want my PSN!"
Selfish and ignorant, brainwashed by Sony :)
We're talking about civil rights and you are talking about "my PSN"...
I donated $25.
Someone needs to ensure our freedoms because clearly many of you sheeple aren't going to do it.
Hacking is 100% legal so all Geohot has to do is survive Sony's financial onslaught and the courts will take care of the rest.

You also could also donate $25 to a worthy Charity. I assure you, you'll feel a lot better, and it'll go to a better place then some lawyers pockets.
Hmm, pie.

First of all, you clearly didn't read my previous posts. Second of all, drop the attitude. This isn't youtube.
I already said I'm not supporting Sony in this case, and I repeat for the 100th fucking time, if they, or any company use this as an excuse to take away rights from the people or me in how we use their product, I will toss their products away and never buy from them until they revise their tactics, and I stand by these words.
Grow up, and stop nitpicking or putting words in my mouth. Just because I'm not on Geohot's side, doesn't mean I'm on Sony's.
Maybe when games on PSN run similarly to what we see on the PC, I wouldn't mind. Until then, no thanks. Running into a douche or two in an online game, I can bear. But to unban yourself, and possibly get others framed (granted this is true)? A bit too much.
Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!
Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Those people are rooting for geohot, while the results they hope for won't happen. If geohot wins, most of us lose, then Sony is probably going to make the next console a ''borrowed'' one so you don't have the right to do anything to it.'Then you don't own your console completely, you can wreck it but don't hack it. It also means more DRM and shit from other companies. If sony wins, nothing will change much, why would it? They won anyway. The closer geohot gets, the more new rules we will get. And btw, you don't have complete pc freedom either, there are many laws which makes downloading and installing certain stuff illigal. Though it depends on the country on how they exactly work. |
And then nobody would buy it... and Sony would have to reconsider.
It's not like Onlive is working out too well.

Wow, internet is making people desensitive to what is legal and what is not. It has always been illegal to modify others work and distribute it. Its just that its hard to rule when it comes to internet.

I'm confused, why would hardware be available to modify. He didn't do that and that is not what the case is about. Sony have never argued against modifying the hardware behind the PS3 just the changing and redistrubution of software that was writen and copywrited by them, right?
I've read back in this thread, don't really understand why this guy has been given money when that money could go to another more worthy cause, not one bought on by themselves. I decided to give some money to Shelter, £5 a month. |
Read the points that Sony is suing him for. One includes violating the right of Sony's ownership of the PS3. They're not talking about the PSN here. They're talking about their right to own a console that a customer has purchased, to be able to enforce what is allowed to be put on there.
Think about it. Sony would not pursue this with such vigor if they knew they weren't getting something out of it (they cannot make their legal fees back. Geohot would just have to declare bankruptcy). They want the legal backing to control consumer purchased hardware at the client-side.

Sony own the PSN network. They can fix access between PSN and PS3. However, it is a lot cheaper to try and enforce their ownership legally on client side. This is what has many people angry
