Forums - Sony - PSN hack lets users unban themselves, ban others

Well, after some googling what I gathered is that ID change is possible on jtagged xbox360 and old xbox, but an ID generator was never made so it never became a real problem. So it should make an appearance for the PS3 before everyone starts going into panic mode.

As for banning, frankly I don't get MS's ban waves, that is why they do it so rarely. That's for the flashed DVD drives though, jtag gets consoles banned within 30min to couple of hours (and it's a lot more like the ps3 hacks in nature). I really don't see the incentive to unban yourself, even if trivially doable (which right now it isn't), if you're going to get banned so quickly again. Ideally I think Sony should ban accounts as well as machines. Unlike the ID, accounts are on Sony's side, so there won't be a way around that, and while multiplayer is free on the PSN, having a new account every couple of hours would probably make the PSN a lot less worth fussing over. Plus it would make people who invested a lot in their accounts already (money, trophies, being on people's friends list to do multiplayer with) think very well before considering a hack.

Don't know how legally doable it would be though, regarding the games one actually bought and blocking access to them.

The whole is probably going to pan out into the state xbox360 is in now, cat and mouse on the PSN and a second machine for those really set into pirating whatever is single player.

Perfectly legal.  Valve basically does it all the time with their VAC bans.

Why not let geohot feel that wrath. He was the one that tried to breach security via linux which caused them to remove it in the first place.

I'm too lazy to copy and paste but here

#3 also has why they should just leave it alone. They are only making it worse

Edit: Sony should get an A for effort, but if this rumor is true then it just goes to prove that everything Sony does just ends up backfiring...

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

"The hack can also be used to ban another console, although they'd need access to that console's ID, which would have to be obtained from a refurb warehouse or willingly given up by an idiot.

The mod scene is justifying its actions by calling Sony bullies and criticizing its strong-arm tactics. "

If this is true it's going to be really sad when I see people actually defending this shit...

All this trouble because Sony was so stupid to beging with and removed a feature they implemented themselves... apparently without really thinking to hard about it.

Goes to show, when your making a product, always think about what your putting on it.

Still, seems unlikely you could ban someone else.  You MAYBE could use the Key to change your PS3 ID and therefore defeat the ban.... and get other peoples PS3's banned that way, but that's about all I could see be possible.

Unless Sony's online was designed by a bunch of monkeys.

giant ennemy crabs from accurate historical battles...they're also good programers ^^

Well when you think about it... if they can hack admin powers to ban other people... that would suggest that the ban powers were specifically built into the PS3 and the PS3's software at defualt... so all it takes is a switch to enable mod powers.

Which is just... beyond stupid.

SONY's banned console list will be located on there PSN servers. The only way around the ban would be to have the console spoof a different ID number to the server, though this is going to pretty difficult as first you would need to figure out how to decrypt keys so you know what the key looks like. Then you would need to repeat the process on a number of different consoles to figure out how the encrpytion process works -- finally you need to convince SONY's PSN servers that the keys your sending are real keys/ID numbers.

Jesus Sony.....just...ugh...

So after reading this, this is a little scary because it does make complete sense in how it works:

http://www.psnathome.com/general/ps3-hackers-can-now-ban-legitimate-users-and-unban-consoles.html

  • 1. Hacker gets banned for using custom firmware
  • 2. Hacker goes to a forum and grabs a random PSN username from forum tags
  • 3. Hacker changes their console ID to a random ID and the forum users user name
  • 4. Hacker plays as random forum user name until they get themselves and random forum user banned.
  • 5. Go to step 2

While there are no cases of anyone doing this, it's apparently know that the person using custom firmware can modify and send whatever information, including PSN username and console ID, they want to Sony.

That's actually enough to make me take my PSN tag off my sig (and not a big deal since I haven't updated it for probably close to a year).

And that's what I meant from my original post in the thread ^

Everytime Sony tries to do anything it seems they get pushed back ten steps, if it's true

http://www.psnathome.com/general/ps3-hackers-can-now-ban-legitimate-users-and-unban-consoles.html

  • 1. Hacker gets banned for using custom firmware fair enough, well deserved
  • 2. Hacker goes to a forum and grabs a random PSN username from forum tags but he needs a random email address to log in
  • 3. Hacker changes their console ID to a random ID and the forum users user name only it can't be random, he needs an ID that actually belongs to some PS3
  • 4. Hacker plays as random forum user name until they get themselves and random forum user banned. come to think of it, he also needs a password for that account

We're all doomed, in 24 hours it's all over as per that article, never mind that if one is going to brute force their way through IDs looking for a working one, it would be more like years. But hey those gaming news sites need their clicks with some sensational story.

And since it's so easy to hack random numbers looking for a legitimate one, let's just go ahead and create gazillions of PSN and Live voucher codes, takes 24 hours!

The facts remain, geohot claims he was hacking it to put linux back in, when he started hacking it in linux to begin with. Sony removed the otherOS feature to minimize the possible damage. YES he hit a brick wall afterwards, but the prospect of the console being hacked does make the removal one logical step. Afterall, the otherOS feature was a service. The fact that he decided to grab the whole arm when given a hand, is what caused this shitstorm.

It's just double standards. I didn't use the otherOS, but I got slightly annoyed when it was removed too.. I think feature removing is wrong, but I see why they did it.
