because most of them suck now?

Because Sonic 1 and 2 rocked so hard and then you got Sonic 3, we lived with it. Sonic and Knuckles.. fine knuckles is kinda cool. Then we got like 50 other sidekicks and crappy 3-d games and the old fans got sick of it. I'm glad Sonic is in Smash Bros so I can go online and Beat his @$$ as Kid Icarus. Not only that but it shows a relationship between SEGA and Nintendo that 15 years ago would have made my head literally explode.(Anybody remember the commercials? "SEGA does what Nintendon't") I really want to like Sonic even to date because I loved the first two games but SEGAs making it really difficult

Sonic 1 and 2 were awesome. Sonic 3 was neat since it let you choose your character.
Sonic and Knuckles was probably the single coolest game on the Sega Genesis. Not only could you play as a totally new awesome character but you could connect the game to all the other Sonic games to play them as Knuckles? Holy %@#$! There was a level of awesome in the very thought of that unparalleled at the time.
Plus the old Sonic games had some of the best music around for any console game that wasn't developed by Square Soft or Nintendo. Who remembers the Flying Battery music? Sky Sanctuary? Lava Reef?

Was it Sonic's transition to 3D that killed the franchise? No. It was the jump to third-party that killed the little blue guy.
Look at the reviews of Sonic Adventure:

Look at the reviews of Sonic Adventure 2:

Universally, Sonic Adventure, and Sonic Adventure 2, are outstanding games, with very high reviews, all over the world! I do not care if you don't like them, for that would be only your opinion. They are both very good games, and both have recieved higher reviews than "any" other Sonic game after it! Both 3D, and 2D. That alone, is proof, that Sonic did not die in the transition to 3D, but because of his multi-platform leap!
If you were to ask anyone what their favorite Sonic game is, many would say "Sonic Adventure 2." It is not uncommon. Lots would also say "Sonic Adventure." Sure, more would say, "Sonic the Hedgehog," "Sonic the Hedgehog 2," "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," and "Sonic CD," but almost no one would mention any other Sonic game. It gets very annoying when people keep on blaming the fall of the franchise because of the blue blur's transition to 3D. If you actually played the Dreamcast games, and got "good" at them, then you would appreciate them more. Are they perfect? No.
There are many things that I do not about the Sonic games for the Dreamcast, but then again, there are many things I don't like in any video game. They could have stayed truer to the series. Ever since Sonic's revision of appearance, he just wasn't really Sonic anymore. He was new, and cool, but he was not the retro Sonic we all grew up with on the Genesis. However, he got far worse after the Dreamcast. I don't even really like his new 2D games. Too bland, boring, and repetitive. They're fine. They are better than the 3D Sonic games after the Dreamcast, but the Dreamcast Sonic games own every other Sonic game after it.

That would be true if a few bad sonic games hadn't been introduced on various SEGA systems. However none of them were too terrible(except sonic 3-d was just 1 2 3 and a 3-d world with absolutely no enemies... so there really wasn't much 3-d game..)1 2 and 3 are all fine and well but I was expecting a sonic 3-d game not unlike mario 64 what I got was disappointing. Sonic started going downhill before SEGA went out it just didn't totally explode until then.
