Forums - Gaming - Is Kinect eating into Wii sales?

One of the many reasons people said Kinect wouldn't sell is because Wii offers motion gaming at a lower price. However, the holidays have passed and Kinect sales are still topping the charts.

Wii seems to be down, do you think Kinect may actually be eating into those Wii numbers? Are people choosing the new motion technology over the cheaper option?

On a side note, I think the Kinect is a big reason PS3 and 360 are neck and neck. Without it, 360 might be hitting third again.

Simply because the Wii has no 3rd party support.

Check the list of games coming out for all systems and you'll see.

According to VGC numbers, yeah. It sure looks like it.

Well it has plenty of 3rd party support. Plenty of mediocre games coming down the pipeline.

Never hurt the Wii before.

Well, you can only do it for so long before the consumers wise up.

1 - you're quite right, without the Kinect launch (and the redesign which I think is too often forgotten BTW) 360 would be a steady third and PS3 would almost certainly have overtaken it by end of 2011

2 - I don't think there is evidence yet 360 is eating into Wii sales in a significant way.  Kinect sold great holiday 2010 yet the Kinect sales made no difference I could see on the Wii seasonal spike - therefore during the Wii's strongest period I saw now major impact.  The post holiday slump is expected for Wii which is more seasonal than the HD consoles.  They all spike during holiday's and they all slump afterwards, but Wii spikes more and slumps more IMHO.

3 - Kinect is still new enough that in the US I believe we're seeing the tail of the launch spike giving the 360 a bit of a boost.  If I'm right over the next 4 weeks the Kinect sales will drop further and stabilize.

4 - At this point I think Kinect may be starting to take a small percentage of Wii sales as a comparable experience attatched to a less seasonal console, but I don't think it's anything major

Short version - at best Kinect has taken a few nibbles from the Wii pie, but I don't believe it can be any more than that based on the numbers relative to each consoles holiday performance and normal seasonal trends plus the behaviour of any of th econsoles close to a large release or game changer (such as the PS3 slim, a price cut or in this case Kinect).

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I don't think in any significant way. I think it's just Wii reaching saturation point or people now awaiting the yearly bargains that do occur during the holidays before making a purchase. If anything I think those that do purchase Kinect already have a Wii in their house.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I don't think so, or at least not significantly so.

Wii is substantially down everywhere. 360 is only substantially up in the Americas, in fact this week and last week 360 was down YoY in EMEAA. I think in the Americas Kinect is having a slight effect on Wii sales, but I think no more than 10%. The rest of the Wii decrease YoY in Americas is due to Wii running out of steam at its current price. And the totality of Wii YoY decrease in the rest of the world is running out of steam at the current price.

If anything PS3 is putting the boot into Wii across EMEAA, but really I think Wii is doing it to itself for the most part.

I think what's truly amazing about 2011 is that it appears 360 has an excellent shot at being the number 1 selling home console for the year, without being the number 1 selling console in the majority of countries. In fact it could be that the margin 360 has over the 2nd placed console is all down to a single country: USA. I am reasonably confident in saying that this is surely unprecedented. Certainly every year Wii has been the #1 console it's been #1 in almost every market, or absolutely every market where it is available. And PS2 was clearly the #1 console pretty much everywhere during its time at the top of the heap. PS1 was more than likely the same. And the Ninty systems before that.

I really didn't think Kinect would put 360 in the number 1 spot in 2011, but I didn't count on Wii cutting off it's own knees, nor Americas getting so much more of a hard on for Kinect than the rest of the world. This has been one odd generation.

no Nintendo brand name is super strong and probably the strongest in the world when it comes to the an percentage of video game buyers who are Parents, who see Nintendo's console as the prefect console for there child as there is fun games for there kids and themselves, no voilence and happy games for the whole family to enjoy.

xbox isn't helped in that market with games like gears of war being the face of xbox 2011 but the huge marketing campaign has eated in new "richer" customers.

And the reason for the Wii decline is the market is most likley tapping out to support past markets and like luxuary items (games are luxuary items)  they have an peak then decline and Wii is on the decline. And an resurgency happing for the wii is unlikely

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Il tell you what i never made a prediction on how kinect will sell but i never thought it would sell this well..... i mean its far exceded my expectations...... but as far as the cutting into the wii..... I dont think its as big as everyone thinks, it is alittle but for the wii problems right now its that they have no games, i mean they had mario mix game came out but that came out to some few negative reviews (including me) which is sad...... but give credit where credit is due.... And thats to kinect
