I think it's cute that people think that a developer decided to introdue a politically motivated and interstesing story doesn't deserve GoTY because it didn't involve an Italian plumber jumping planets.

Admit it; both games are brilliant and if you don't see the innovation in either BioShock or SMG, you aren't paying much attention to either. There are four or five games that I don't mind seeing get GoTY so stop getting your panties in such a bundle over it.

You see how ridiculous this kind of statement sounds?  (NOTE: I love both Galaxy and Bioshock)

 Bioshock was an absolutely fantastic experience, aurally, graphically, storywise, immersion-wise, and gameplay-wise.  Biggest plot twist since Kotor, most interesting setting in any game, ever, unsettling atmosphere, fun-to-use plasmids, tightly-honed gunplay, and of course, the Big Daddies, make this one of the best games ever made.

Huh? So are you saying that GI is bad because it honored Bioshock or because it includes Wii as "next generation" (which is now actually the current generation)?
And I am not sure how these are connected.

My comments about GI on another thread (one I started) were about reviewers not listing it at ALL -- not about them not listing it in the top space. I don't have a 360 and I am not that good in first-person shooter/adventure games. And I am one of the oldest one on this board (44). But even I can see the greatness in Bioshock. When it came out, I said to a local indie game store owner that it would be better than Halo 3. And I stand by that assessment. (In other words, it is possible for people to think both games are good.)

That's what confounds me about people here:

"Game X didn't win GoTY! I'm cancelling my subscription and never reading publication X again!"

Why does it matter go much? SMG is a great game, as is BioShock. IMO, Assassin's Creed, Halo 3, Rock Band, and a handful of other games are also great. I don't really care which one wins, just as long as a great game is rewarded in the end.

It's not as if GI handed the GoTY to Sonic and the Secret Rings or Lair. Then everyone would have a right to be pissed and question how far the GI staff has their head stuffed up their ass.

To build on what rocketpig said,

felt the nominees for GotY on X-Play were well-rounded and included a good crop. Bioshock won and I have no problem with that.

GI was actually internally consistent. Bioshock and CoD4 were the only two games it awarded with 10s (SMG got a 9.75). So it gave its award to a game that it judged as perfection.

I felt the nominees for GotY on Spike's VGA showed a lack of bredth (four M-rated Xbox 360 games includuing three FPSs and one RPG). I can't remember who won but felt the award nominees tilted more toward the demographic than the true measure of the games. (The same four games were also nominated for 360 game of the year). Bioshock won this award as well and is a deserving choice.

In other words, something just does not seem to add up when the highest rated game of this generation is not nominated for game of the year. Also, when none of the three shooters nominated for Game of the Year wins Shooter of the Year (CoD4 won it. It also should have been a GotY nominee).
