Nintendo of Europe marketing boss, Laurent Fisher has said his company doesn't deny competition from Sony's NGP, but said it sees "any kind of entertainment" as a rival.

Speaking in the latest issue of Edge, fisher completely echoed comments made by Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai

Asked to what extent Sony's NGP announcement stole limelight from 3DS, Fisher told Edge: 

"Basically my short-term goal is to make sure as many people as possible try Nintendo 3DS. It's not that we're denying competition. The thing is, we can't plan how we should respond to the competition because the competition is mainly limited to the hardware.

"Every day we will find new competition," he added. "Taking a broader view, we're competing with any kind of entertainment. You go to the cinema, whatever. We only have limited time and money to allocate to entertainment. 

"Video games are no longer unique as interactive entertainment - even blogs and YouTube provide interactivity. So Nintendo, and video games generally, have to come back to that unique experience, that unique surprise, that makes sure people return to us. If we fail to do that, consumers will go somewhere else."

In a near identical statement, the NGP firm said this week it thinks "movie, TV and even drinking party can be its rivals."

well it is. I could go an see 10 movies or i can go buy an video game. 

I could watch free to air tv and not even bother buying an video game. 

So entertainment competes with itself all the time. 

But the NGP has drawn alot of hype and attention off the 3DS. With all the major game sites and mags all talking about the NGP now but again its had an knock on affect with all the talks about the NGP have fueled talks about the NGP v 3DS, so no one loses in that deparment

Of course, it is competition and it's a good thing. It helps make sure that Nintendo doesn't be lazy and just come out with remakes and ports of their old games, but rather come out with fresh content for the 3DS (plenty of people will still buy the remakes/ports).

Damn. That will surely be the end of gaming.

well, not sure abou 3DS, but I know that NGP does have webbroswer and movie playback feature.

so yes, it is competition.

3DS has a universal browser, you can pull it up any time.  Even in-game, without quitting the game.

3DS will play 3D movies, but Nintendo's been cagey about how that'll actually happen (DD? retail cards? Streaming services?).  They have announced tie-ups with major Japanese and European partners for "pushed" video content already though.

Yeah, it's pretty much been Iwata's line since 2004.  They view all leisure/entertainment as their competition.  It was actually a pretty controversial stance way back then.
