Forums - Gaming - I don't want portable consoles.

LONG VERSION!  WARNING WORDS!  READING IS HARD!

Yet, I cannot get excited for the 3DS, or the NGP even though I owned a PSP and a DS.  Because I know exactly what handhelds are becoming.  Wannabe consoles.  Just like how consoles want to be like PC's without the ease of use and internet porngraphy, handhelds are now taking away what made them great over console counterparts with basically ""meh, screw it, everybody does the same thing.""

I love the new graphics,  I love the downloadable titles to the systems,  but I don't like...

Shorter battery life.  Higher prices for hardware and software.  Console ports on handhelds.  Region locking.  All these are a serious problem, I don't want to spend that much money because its a handheld and it should COST LESS, I know I can get the games elsewhere being some are ports, the shorter battery life means I won't take the system anywhere, lastly that amazing door that open to the vast library that the DS offered is now closed and chained off.  Wow, I legally buy your product and you punish the customer, thanks Nintendo.

I don't want a portable console.  Neither should anyone of us if the consquence of the new ""handhelds"" is us to pay more for less.

It's way too early to despair. The great thing about 3DS and NGP is that they can provide both. You can make short pick up fully portable in nature games and you can make longer console like games.

Battery life sadly is something we have to live with. I mean that technology is old and all the groundbreaking technology jumps already happened for batteries. Also battery life will be better in next refreshes of NGP /3 DS after 28nm production process comes in 2011/2012.

Region lock is bad but we might see some not official ways of dealing with it. Also there's still chance that NGP will be  region free (as it starts from position of underdog it needs to be more consumer friendly)

I want a handheld console. If the NGP graphics are nearly as good as the PS3, I would probably sit around my house and play it more often than the PS3. My friends/family can all play COD/Killzone/LPB together on our own handhelds in the same room. As it is now, my nephews/family and friends have to play in their house and I have to play in mine...which is cool, but it would be more fun if we could all play in the same room. Also, my PS3 is hooked up to my only HDTV...this TV is used by everyone in my family. At any one time, their may be someone who wants to play the PS3, watch TV, or watch a movie. With the NGP, I will essentiually have a PS3 and HD TV in my hands...for a fraction of the cost. No to mention, the portability...playing anywhere in my house (for wifi version) or playing anywhere (3G version).

I've been saying this for years now...majority of the people is not interested in playing core games on the bus, train, lunch break or anywhere on the go. Games need to be simple, and provide short bursts of fun. and if you're back home, why would you want to play a "me too" portable console version of uncharted when you can play the real thing?

Regardless, smartphones/tablets are going to slaughter portable consoles in the next 5 years. I've seen the light...

handhelds were made to bring the console experience portable. only thing diffrent is a things like a touch screen and no r2,l2 or 2nd analog stick.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

Dont buy one then Easy as that. I personally love them, and cant wait for the 3DS and NGP

Totally agree. The battery life itself turned me off these portable consoles.

I'll probably be sticking to the DS for a while. I'm actually still curious about the Xperia phone. Wonder if it will be my next handheld/phone.

I guess your battery was to short then.

I don’t mind how portables will be I mean I would like graphics as powerful as 3DS with 3D rather than with GB graphics. And for now playing 3D on a big screen requires glasses and it is too expensive. so I see it as a good thing

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

if you ask me, portable consoles and home consoles will be the same thing in a couple generations.  Much like CDs basically capped the level of sound quality people care about, HD is going to cap the level or resolution people care about.

so with that assumption made, the NGP basically proves in 1 or 2 more generations we can get maxed out graphics on a handheld sized device.  At this point I figure all devices will be handheld in size with an ability to communicate with the other devices in our house like a our TVs and controllers negating the need for seperate handheld and home consoles.

they will also make phone calls, run MS office, have GPS, credit card capabilities, texting, social networking, start my car, be a TV remote, and a ton of other features I can't even imagine yet.

Basically, smartphones are going to take over the world.

imo.

This is how I feel. I don't have time to play console like games on a portable. That's why my phone is a win. I think a lot of other people feel the same way.

Short answer:

Then don't buy a portable console (or new handheld)
