It was so awesome when you were used to all the controls.

I'd be tossing out orders, targeting, and rushing around like nobody's business.

Hell yeah, Ordering to Cover the escorts, while switching enemy sub-weapons to order a swift attack through them, while powering up frontal shields when running over enemy blockades, or boosting engine power to outrun the Shivan fighters all at the same time, it was pretty amazing xD.

OMG!! I can still remember the intro movie to Freespace crystal clear, it was so amazingly pretty at that time, also it was the first DVD-rom I ever had.

That brings back memories. It was one of my first dvd-rom's as well. I had my pc hooked up to an old 2nd hand CRT projector shooting a 72 inch picture on a white washed wall in a time 17 inch was considered big for a pc monitor. I could watch the cut scenes over and over again.

It's about time for a new space sim/combat game to come out. My favourite space sim is still frontier elite 3. Nothing since has replicated the awesome feeling of landing a space craft from space on a planet, any planet you want. Flying into the atmosphere, levelling out your descent, hurtling across the mountains and oceans, slowing down just in time for a gentle touchdown at one of the local space ports. Combat was rather weak in elite, but that's what freespace was for. A mariage of the two with a mass effect type universe/story line and you have my perfect game.

It'll be on consoles also, so the extra 1-3M sales would be a bonus they cannot ignore even if the PC version with Eyefinity / 3D vision surround is the superior choice. Besides, the engines etc have matured to the point where they can easily create the high definition assets quickly and efficiently.

Even though I don't disagree with your point of view, when it comes to consoles, I believe the biggest challenge for a game like Freespace 3 to come out on consoles would be it's control scheme.

As far as I can remeber, Freespace 2 had 25 inputs for Targetting, 22 inputs for Ship&Weapons and 44 inputs for misc controls such as Squad orders, different energy outputs for shields, engines, weapons, etc.

Memorizing them all on the Keyboard was a challenge unto itself, and I seriously don't see how they can be simplified into the limited options of a console controller without losing the amount of control that you had in the previous games.

When I played it I barely used any of them. They could easily be rationalised for consoles, theres no question about that. The fact that all consoles come with joysticks is a bonus in reality.

Tease.

It can be done, but as Thranx suggested, some sort of voice command would be a far better choice. That could take care of the more complex inputs, which a lot are necessary to pass some of the missions (escort missions, bomber runs, the Endgame mission is quite hectic to survive in the first few minutes if you aren't constantly switching between shield and weapon intensities).
