Forums - Nintendo - Reggie talks prices of software!

Well first of all.  thank god they are not jumping up in price like $10.

now on to apple and so on games.  It takes 2 seconds to realize that lets say a $2 is 100% profit.  Now it sells great or amazing or whatever you want to consider 1 million sales.

That is at max $2 million revenue, with getting 100% and not having that $2 be split between whoever may be.

Now on to sony or nintendo.  Nintendo for sake of topic.  a 3rd party sells a game for $35, and hell lets say they only get $10 per game.  i don't know what % of each game sale the developer gets but lowballed it for sake of argument.  now at $10, they ONLY need to sell 200,000 to reach that same $2 million revenue.

200,000 is a way more easy figure to reach than 1 million.  Now yes the development costs will be higher for 3DS than for a phone game as well.

Soon, Nintendo will be the only game developer who doesn't devalue its own games by falling into the iPhone trap.

Too bad there's GBA emulation on Ipod/Iphone/Ipad devices so they don't even have to do it themselves.

Pixel Art can be fun.

@Zlejedi  everything you said i agree with 100%, I think this Reggie guy is just getting scared that the general public will get wise to the BS, and I agree that the time of of charging 30-40 for a game you can get for much cheaper and free elsewhere is going away and cannot happen sooner. Hes bitching about Angry Birds which is actually a good game, and then I walk in a store and see biggest loser for Wii selling for 30 bucks and imaginez baby for 25??? Get real!!!

Besides it really does not matter, the IPhone/Pad/Pod is not a dedicated console for gaming, those people arent going to pay more than a few bucks for games anyway. Its not going to hurt any of the dedicated console's business. IMHO if Ninty werent so stubborn about the whole online thing(they are getting better) They could do what Sony is doing and embrace BOTH type of games. They have their massive Metal Gears and Final Fantasies  and they have there PS minis. There is no rule that states you cant do both

He didn't bitch about Angry Birds, though, but claimed it was one among many, which is more or less what they're doing with their Touch Generations stuff (rising up over a sea of crap), but with their quality above crap, they're making far more per unit

bringing up shovelware is not the best defense.

Lets bring in only nintendo games since Reggie can't speak and represent other companies.  While yes you may be able to see similar games to such as brain age or nintendogs.  Those are full quality BIG games.  You won't see anything close to its offerings/quality/content/visuals on the phone market for < $10 whatever.

And again he was not knacking those FEW good games like Angry Birds.  He was saying out of the millions of iphone games that basically 99% of them are crap.  I think we can all agree that most all games are total crap or else total COPIES/RIPOFF's of other phone games.

hell its just like facebook.  look at the couple great games on there and you'll find 1000 basically plagurized copies of that just using different names and pictures, and layout.  take for example castle age.  not sure if it was first, but there are 100's of games that look like the exact same layout/style/play

ok so maybe bitch was too strong of a phrase.  sure Reggie cant speak for those companies, but the fact is they are on Ninty systems, at any time ninty can say 'hey keep that garbage away form my Wii/DS" but they dont so they are still somewhat accountable.  As for Ninty games, of course they big full games, no one is saying otherwise, and yes the content on those Iphone is mostly crap.  My issue is that he seems to be threatened by the cheap price of those games, and that his customers would expect games on Ninty platforms to go down, I find that silly, people are not that stupid i think most can tell the difference between a damn smartphone and a dedicated gaming device. The Ipod crowd didnt buy those devices to play games so its not like they'll ever be willing to put down more than a few bucks for a game. The PSP/DS crowd are gamers and they expect to pay premium price for premium games.  Both could exist together without one hurting the other

At any point Nintendo could say that, then third parties freak out and drop the good support along with the bad. Nintendo no longer has the kind of market dominion to dictate to third parties, and because of Nintendo's poor standing with third parties when compared to the competition, they know they can't say anything about shovelware one way or another

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I fully agree, in fact, to me Angry Birds was barely worth the free price I paid for it. It was fun, once. It took me maybe, 4-5hrs to beat every level, then what. Its done. no replayability.

At most it's worth $2.

However, games for $30-50 on handhelds and consoles that I purchase, give my many more hours of initial play and countless possibilities of replayability. That's the primary difference in the greater majority of both gaming segments.

Sure there are those games like bejeweled or various card/board games that have a lot of replayability and are free or only a few dollars, but those are just the same as crappy console games that aren't worth the packaging they come in. They are the smaller segment of either set.

Plus, those that play those games are not the consumers consoles are targeting.

When will people learn that iOS and eventually all mobile gaming on phones etc are NOT in the same market as handheld gamers. Mass market or not, they are not the same. They probably only share a 10% (at most) overlap of similar consumers.

Therefore, the rise if cheap cell phone gaming won't do ISH to handhelds, just as cheap/free flash gaming on the net never hurt home consoles in any fashion.

In fact, I am willing to bet these cheap games will become bigger financial powerhouses on handhelds where they will migrate to as their devs seek higher returns for their software.

@superchunk  preach, man PREACH.

@Mr. Khan  your probably right, but to me it doesnt do that well for Ninty's image, at least to some core gamers, I mean when i walk into Best Buy and I see Dora the explorer, Icarly, Barbie, tennis game #215, biggest loser 5th edition all over the damn Wii wall, and then i look at teh PS3 side and see the Need for Speeds, LBP, Fallout, Street Fighter, Bioshock. For me it doesnt paint the Wii in a positive light.  I literally have to did thru the shovelware to get to the good games on Wii, IMHO when you have to search for good games on a console that console's library is questionable.  I know the shovelware has its place and people like it, but does it have to be so much??? A fireplace simulator???? A f****g bacheolor game???? how the hell do you even think to make a game about that???? Who are the people buying these games

@rolstoppable  I never got the DSi(no GBA slot? ill stick to Lite). So ill take your word for it.  My next question is, why would Reggie even say this if its clear his company is also going this route? Those DSi games cant cost that much more than the Iphone ones.
