So I was just curious about what controllers people like/dislike, and if anyone else uses strange settings or whatnot. Wall of text incoming =)
My history of using strange settings dates back to Halo 1. When I first started playing with my friend, I didn't like how look and shoot where both in the right hand. I thought it would be easier to coordinate looking and shooting if they were separated. So, even during the first night of playing Halo, I changed to Southpaw.
I immediately noticed a HUGE difference in control. I imagine if I didn't start out with it, it would be extremely difficult to learn to do, but because Halo was the first console FPS I really got into, it was okay. Then I noticed that I couldn't turn or aim quickly enough, so I maxed out the look sensitivity . This isn't really a big deal, but I'm the only one among my groups of friends that does this with every shooter.
Now I was getting somewhere, I had great control, could turn on a dime, and still had no problem with headshots, but something was missing. I hated using my thumb to press buttons to jump or melee. So I figured I'd try something, I took my first finger off the trigger and placed it on the buttons, then put my middle finger on the trigger. This was exactly what I was looking for.
Having been a trumpet player for years, it was easy to use my middle finger to shoot just as quickly (if not faster) as with my first finger. During my search for the most efficient way for me to play Halo, I discovered the claw. It wasn't until years later that I had heard that other people used it too.
As for controller preference, I HATE the PS3 controller. I probably just got so used to the huge xbox controller that I haven't been able to get used to the smaller controllers since. That and I shouldn't have to buy an add-on so that the triggers don't completely suck. I play music, I have strong fingers; my fingers just slide right off half of the time.
TL;DR, Well, that was a lot. In summary, I dislike the PS3 controller (stupid triggers) and I invert Y axis. For shooters I use southpaw, generally high look sensitivity settings, and the claw for a strange grip.
