Ugh. 4 hours seems far too short, even if it was at maximum brightness. That means that a non-Wi-fi, normal brightness, non-3D gaming session might last 7 hours. Add 3D into that, and I'd estimate about 5.5 hours. Not bad, but it's only comparable to my 6-year old DS Phat, which has a 6 hour battery life.

It's a new console. Like the DS, they were prepared to sacrifice battery life for performance down to the 6 hour level. Sony were prepared to go to the 4 hour level with the PSP1. I'm betting on a repeat, followed by a 3DS Lite which is coming no matter what Iwata says now, with more battery life.

The 3DS is already "Lite" which is why it came late.

In two years, the CPU and GPU could be die shrunk to 20nm from the current 45nm. It will use less than a quarter of the power they do now. Combined with improvements in battery and display technology i'd be surprised if they couldn't add two hours to the lifespan.

They may not be able to reduce it in size but they will certainly be able to improve the battery life.

And maybe a better 3D display which you can view from different angles might I add.

OT: I am good with the battery life it has now so no problem for me

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

i still don't know why this is such a big issue. IF your playing longer then 4hours in a session you need to go outside more.

well a flight often lasts longer than 4 hours....

but it wouldnt be a big deal to me... 4 hours isnt THAT bad.

still, you can do other things on a plane. ie sleep. watch tv

So worst case is closer to 4hrs than 3. Good. What does that mean for best case with lower brightness and 3D off? 8hrs?

Wouldn't the worst case scenario be with wireless on?

Doesn't matter unless game exchanges data wirelessly often. Just like the DSi, Wi-Fi being 'on' in options menu doesn't put any significant drain on the battery unless game actually goes online. It's kinda obvious, but for some reason people still like keep wireless function 'off' on DSi.

What if you don't want to sleep or watch TV, are you still sad and in need of a life then? Stop making crappy excuses, there are loads of kids that will be playing this for hours on a rainy day, do they need to go outside more?!

If the kids play inside the house, they should just plug the AC adapter in.

And you can turn it as much as you want, playing more than 4 hours per day on a regular basis is just way too much. (I stated that on another thread already.) I see that sometimes people play 4 hours or longer, but really, how often is that the case? How often do you go on 16 hour flights every year? How often is there no power outlet somewhere near? For the vast majority of people a battery life of 4 hours is totally enough. And if you're really that desperate, just get an external charger, I'm sure there will be one to fit both 3DS and PSP2.

BTW, of course I'd love longer battery life, too, but thinking about it realistically, that will be quite difficult in the future with handhelds always getting stronger and stronger. 4-5 hours will probably be the upper cap from now on.

My thread for teaching VGC some Nigerian slangs

I'm sooo waiting for another version :/

Wi-Fi takes so much energy so I can't even imagine how the battery time is when it's on.

Firstly I was answering for a plane situation. If it rains you can still do other things. Gaming 4 hours straight is plenty of time.  The other hours of the day can be spent better and any how with a recharge if they REALLY want to game more, they can fit in  a further 4 hours meaning 8hours a day. Which is more then enough time.

It's not a good enough excuse to say "do something else".
