Forums - General - I need some opinions on a matter

So, I've been dating my girlfriend for a year and a half now, and still going strong.  We barely ever fight, see each other very often, and overall I would say we have a rock solid relationship.

The only reason I ever get uneasy is because she is a dance major; ballet to be specific.  I don't know why, but whenever I think of her dancing in partnered pieces I get so uncomfortable about the idea of it.  I know its just for a performance/show, and I've tried to tell myself that so many times, but I just can't help how I react to it.  I don't get mad, but there is a definite change in myself.  Like I feel uncomfortable and physically feel it.

2 months ago she was the lead in a piece and had a few sections where she was dancing with a male ballet dancer from her college, and being the good/supportive boyfriend I went to go see her show (twice).  But oh man during those partnering sections I was not liking it.  I know that ballet is very classy dancing, but its still emotional with lots of touching, embracing, and trying to convey to the audience that the dancers have a relationship.  I guess I'm just old fashioned and don't like seeing an emotional connection/relationship like that with someone else. Is that a terrible thing to say?  I don't know.

We'll be graduating soon and her dream job is to dance professionally (duh) and I don't know how I will be able to sit in the audience and watch if she is doing stuff like this (She likes to watch videos of dancing and she sent me this one because she loves it, its only 3 min long and will give you an idea of what I'm talking about).

Also shes aware of most of this as I've told her that I feel this way.

DISCLAIMER:  Before someone yells at me for being an asshole, this isn't a case of me asking her to stop or not allowing her to do it.  This is her major, she honestly loves it, and this is going to be what she does for a living if everything works out.  I understand that.  I'm just sort of venting as well as trying to gauge how ridiculous I'm being, and trying to find ways to get over this.

Also, I know this is an internet forum so I should probably take this advice with a grain of salt.  This is mostly just to get a mass opinion, and I'll be talking to other people in my (real) life, as well as her too.

If you read all that thank you.

that reaction is natural, its evidence of your feelings for her :)

i can see how it looks very intimate, but i would hazard a guess that whens she's on stage she's probably too busy focusing so much on not messing up to even notice a guy there behind her :)

i think it would maybe hurt her if you didn't show up :) just let her know how proud you are of her :D you're probably still going to feel the niggles, but i think that a little bit of jealousy can confirm your attraction/love/desire/etc to/of her :)

The Scottish girl speaks sense... listen to her!

I'll add that the longer you date and the more performances you see with her in, the more comfortable you'll likely be with the whole thing.

I figured this would probably happened, I'm just nervous about the "transition period".  If all works out we'll be living together after we graduate, so the "niggles" as trashleg put it will likely be an everyday thing.

I was convinced I was crazy for thinking like this, but thanks for the encouraging words.  Feels good to hear stuff like that from an unbiased observer.

Go up on stage and punch the guy she is dancing with in the nuts.

That'll teach the bastard to dance like that with your woman.

"I guess I'm just old fashioned and don't like seeing an emotional connection/relationship like that with someone else."

I'm no performer, but I certainly would not assume that there is an emotional connection between two dance partners. There is obviously a relationship, a professional one. Yeah, we've all heard about relationships between performers springing up, but I'd bet it's about as likely to happen between performers as it is between just about any other type of co-workers where there is a healthy mix of the genders.

As with any relationship, keep your eyes open and your feet on the ground, but don't let your natural jealous/protective instincts get in the way of something that could be good. Love is a gift, enjoy it.
