Forums - Microsoft - Will Microsoft surprise as all and announce a new handheld??

If they do, this would be the best time to put this device into play. But we all know 3DS is gonna dominate the market. Unless Microsoft comes out with a 3D handheld themselves, more powerful and in HD.

I'd have to say no.  It would just be a gauranteed loss for them financially.  We already have the 3DS, which may appeal to the more casual crowd.  While the NGP will definitely appeal to the more hardcore crowd.  If so, then both markets are represented.  There's nothing MS could do to win in that market.  They would have to both outperform the NGP price wise and spec wise, as well as come out with many appealing exclusives, to defeat Sony.  And they would have to release as many unique exclusives as Nintendo, as well as beat them price wise and spec wise, to appeal to the more casual crowd. And I don't think there is really any room in the handheld market for a 3rd console that takes the middle route.

Why release a handheld with likely <30M units sold when they can release a portable OS which sells to >100M devices if not over 300M potentially?

Your post has a hidden heart in it...

Anyways, they would probably make a good amount of money on it, but I doubt they will do it.

Seriously? Do you even know you're just creating a straw-man argument, beating it with a stick and declaring them the loser?

Everyone knows all they have to do is stick Windows 8 onto Arm put it in a tablet and they'll probably make 2* the revenue LTD of the NGP/3DS LTD combined. :-p theres such thing as an unfair advantage and they has it. They'll even sell 20M units without any gamez, which is like 4* better than Sony and the PS3.

Well theres no point... they always do better when they work with third parties than when they go it alone.

But creating a handheld means creating exclusive games, something MS fails to get

But creating a console means creating exclusive games, something MS fails to get which is why they are dead last in the console wars by a large margin.

no way

they need to dominate in home consoles area first and make big brand name and only then will they make an handheld

MS themselves said that they do not have the resources to support 2 platform in 2009 and so an xbox handheld is far away

We're not talking about putting MS's OS on someone else's HW here or even their own tablet (they already do that).  We're talking about MS creating their own handheld gaming device and having a chance to compete with Nintendo and Sony.  I'm saying they wouldn't.  Do try to stay on topic.

Well technically all consoles are made by Chinese companies like Foxconn.
