Forums - Gaming - We Have The 3DS and NGP: Do we Even Need any Other Consoles?

I think I'll still be feeling the fine line between home consoles and handhelds because frankly if I have the time, I like playing my JRPGs in 4-5 hours chunks, and I can barely stand an hour on any of the handhelds (and that is in home conditions, with plenty of pillow propping).

The screen size is definitely also an issue. My laptop's screen is of higher resolution than my TV, and obviously a lot more portable, but I don't spend my time watching anything on it when I can use the TV.

We are not quite there yet to have handhelds connect to your TV at home and deliver the same power that a home console can, and the NGP's current design doesn't even have TV out (don't think the 3DS has either).

I agree with the basic premise of the original post. Microsoft should exit the console business.

Why, Rol, I do believe you are acting a just little bit like a hater. All that's missing is the oh-so-clever M$.

I instantly saw the humorous side to Rol's comment

Pathetic Earthlings

No, bring on the console games. The Japanese only like handhelds because their dwellings are so small they practically live in holes.

I spend about 45% of my gaming time on my DS, I expect the 3DS to have an even higher percentage assuming home console gaming remains similar to this gen.

I didn't, but I realized he wasn't serious.

I've yet to see a Wiimote/Move-style controller on a handheld, so there's that.

Tilt controls in a racing game would be problematic, too.

Yep, full gesture motion controls are one reason. Sharing with others, either through multiplayer or simply allowing them to watch, is another.

You're wrong about handheld tilt racing, though. It works great on iOS.

I'm sure that mechanically it is perfectly sound, since all the necessary tech is there.

It's more the problem of tilt controls on a handheld necessitates tilting the screen, which isn't quite as... immersive.

badge, no. Me thinks you are taking this just a tad bit too seriously.

I see what you did there

Oh, yes it is. The clever solution is for the screen to tilt back. Can't seem to embed this for some reason:

I thought of that as a potential solution, but hadn't imagined that it might be implemented yet.

Point conceded, if the tilt-back lag is reduced a bit further.
