Yep, full gesture motion controls are one reason. Sharing with others, either through multiplayer or simply allowing them to watch, is another.

You're wrong about handheld tilt racing, though. It works great on iOS.

I'm sure that mechanically it is perfectly sound, since all the necessary tech is there.

It's more the problem of tilt controls on a handheld necessitates tilting the screen, which isn't quite as... immersive.
