Forums - Sony - Will NGP suffer the same fate as the PSP?

SO the NGP is announced, hardware specs look awesome. But the list of games...

Killzone
Uncharted
Wipeout
Littlebigplanet

These are again, console based games. Ofcourse the show is far from over but what do you think, will Sony make the same mistake by making console-lite games for the NGP?

depends.... do you count 65 million units sold as "failure"?

with Playstation Suite, Sony will be making a lot more money software wise,

Games are one thing, the entry fee is always a big hurdle. If the price is too high for the system, people aren't going to buy it immediately. They'll be hurting in Japan if there isn't some form of backwards compatibility.

The price of the device will decide if it sinks or swims (along with the launch lineup).

But the PSP was definitely a success for Sony in few different ways, so I think they are hoping the NGP will have the same fate of the PSP to an extent.

yea, that's always going to be a problem with any new gadget or technology.  The entry price point is always going to be higher than what the general masses are willing to pay.

I know a lot of people here are going to be excited, but the thing seems too complicated to move beyond the current PSP base. I mean, how are you supposed to play games? It could be front touch, back touch, sticks, buttons, motion or any combination. That excites the techie people, but could be very confusing to average people. There is nothing at all in this device that makes the PSP more accessible for the average person, except maybe the touchscreen, but that's somewhat lost amongst all the other controls.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Depends on if Nintendo has learned anything. Super Mario Bros 3DS at this year holiday season and nobody will bother with NGP outside of Japan, maybe. In a sense, the same happened last gen, it was a tie before killer apps came to DS. Nowadays Nintendo is in more favourable position for a while due to more profound third party support.

It looks very good so far, and i am impressed by the feature set, enough that i think it could work at $249, a bit higher than my previous thoughts of $199. Though any more than that and it'll be a tough sell (especially if PS3 gets a price cut to $249/$349 this year).

I dunno... PSP2 seems to be in the same position as the PSP... and it's price is probably going to be around $300...

The 3DS is going to be epochal, so I have virtually no hope that the PSP2 can win this race.

Though it's not gonna be "suffering."

Looking at how PSP has suffered outside of Japan, if nothing will change in game support NGP might be in much more tougher position than PSP was at the beginning.

BTW why NGP? It stands for Neo Geo Pocket =)
