Forums - Nintendo - Reports of sickness playing 3DS has some truth to it!

Hey alittle while ago after Nintendo World in Japan their was a report from a news company in Japan that over 50% of gamers who played the 3DS got sick. Viper and other staff here were quick to refute this report as bogus saying they had played extensively on the 3DS and seen no side effects.

However shortly after a couple VGChartz users reported getting a little dizzy after playing 3DS (Sorry can't remember who). This had me a bit worried as I get motion sick very easily, I also pre-ordered the 3DS if it makes me sick I'll have to turn the 3D off which would really dissapoint me.

I was optamistic that the reports were false and maybe the VGChartz user had an anti-Nintendo bias. Untill today when CTV revealed stats on 3D technology making people sick. According to the report on CTV 6% of all consumers get sick from viewing 3D. This report was not aimed directly at 3DS it was aimed at all 3D in general.

Apparently it happens because not all of us are able to process 3D images. Since one image is sent to each eye according to CTV this confuses the mind and eyes causing a dizzyness feeling, nausia and head aches. CTV also reported that these symptoms increase the closer you are to the screen.

According to CTV because users are so close to the 3DS screen the symptoms will be amplified. So their you have it, its not 50% as the japanese company reported but it isn't non-existant either. 6% of us will not be able to play 3DS without feeling sick.

I don't know about you but I'm hoping it doesn't make me feel sick, I don't want to be in that 6%, also do you think that the 6% is a large enough market to worry about? Or will Nintendo have more then enough non-sick consumers buying 3DS?

well if nintendo is planning to sell 100 million( just an estimate to make the math easy lol) during the life of the 3DS then 6% is 6 million which i do think is a pretty big number.  I think this is already taken care of by allowing the possibility of turning off so nintendo just has to make sure they let people know they have an option and they will be fine :)

I am a nintendo fan, not a nintendo fanboy

calm down mr dramatica

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I'm sure there is some truth to it, I do expect it to be something most people will overcome after a couple weeks of half hour play sessions though.

For some reason I don't think I'll be effected personally.  Hopefully anyway.

i dont go see 3d movies anymore :(   --> 3d isnt for me :(  (doesnt mean 3ds will be bad, i just wont use 3d if i get it)

The report claiming the 3DS was making people sick was touting a number of about 50%.  I have several friends who can't watch 3D movies because of aforementioned issues, it's not terribly unusual and I thought most people knew about this already.

70,000 people at E3 2010.  How many reports did we get about the 3DS making anyone dizzy or sick?   At 50%, that should have been 35,000 reports.  At even 6%, we still should have received 4,200 reports.   But they were quite rare and certainly didn't amount to those figures.

Yeah, well. These random percentage I pulled outta my ass backs up my argument. Where as, your experience with factual conrete numbers means nothing to me.
