Paradox announce free-to-play MMO Salem. When your character dies he’s gone forever

Salem, a new free-to-play title, has been announced by Paradox Interactive.

The MMORPG is set in a mythical version of New England, and see players stepping off a boat in Boston and then having to fend for themselves in the ‘New World’.

The game puts emphasis on a player-driven world that promotes crafting skills. Even more interesting, when your character dies he’s gone forever, leaving all your creations to be pillaged by other players. Harsh. Video explaining it all after the jump.

Whilst only in the early stages of development, Salem is due for a 2011 release.

Here’s Game Designer/Creative Director Bjorn Johannessen talking more about this exciting MMO. He doesn’t die in the video thankfully. -

Magna Mundi will have 400 playable countries

It has been revealed that Paradox’s Manga Mundi will have 400 playable countries.

The game presents players with believable historical scenarios, with the goal that the game stays true to what actually happened. It takes the grand strategy route, with players having to “Manage warfare, diplomacy, economy, knowledge, internal affairs, cultural outlook, religious policies, espionage and much more to engrave in gold your country’s name in the Annals of History… or fail in that delicate balance and witness how it will become a faded footnote lost in ages long past.”

Pride of Nations Preview

It’s telling that each of the sessions here at the Paradox Convention is meant to last 30 minutes, but the presentation of Pride of Nations lasts an hour. It’s a staggering game, epic in scale and minute in detail.

PoN is a simultaneous turn-based strategy game originally designed for simulation of conflicts for previous Paradox games like Rise of Prussia. Their ambition with their new game is to move to a much wider simulation. They still have the military aspects, but also economy, diplomacy, social, and more.

The game begins with the player taking control of a major power. In the example game we’re being shown by the game’s producer, Philippe Thibaut, he’s taken control of England. Each campaign runs between 1850 and 1920, with each individual turn covering just two weeks. That makes a full game 1600 turns long, and even the developer admits he’s never finished a game.

At this point in history, Victoria and Albie are the Royals, and Lord John Russell is the Prime Minister. You win the game by gaining a certain number of prestige points, by conquering different regions, building monopolies in trades, and leading your country through dynamic missions the game creates for you. For example, for the next ten years, Britain must be the world’s number one producer of steel.

Time for hype

Whoa, nice. Looking forward for some of these.

I'm glade With Fire & Sword is being localised, I was starting to think it wouldn't be as it's been out for like a year now in Poland, and it looks interesting.

I didn't buy Divine Wind yet too. there's also Citiies in Motion coming out soon, which is like a Transport Tycoon lite, only focused on passenger transport.

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Around the Network

Didn't know that. It sounds interesting. The trailer didn't really show much, but there's a wall there with four or five ladders, that alone is a big improvement.

Salem sounds pretty interesting.

Brilliant.

A couple of other interesting tidbits-

Fredrik West, the company CEO, is up front talking through the history of the company, and the things people have said to me over the years. In 2001, people said hardcore was dying, but Europa Universalis 2 sold 250,000 copies. In 2003, he was told that the PC was dying, but since then the company’s revenue is up 1000%.

Other important stuff from Frederick Wester’s (CEO) quick opening talk: Paradox’s 2010 Gross Revenue 45% from previous year / profit up 300% year-over-year. Quoted Gamestop executive that said in 2008 that digital distribution was 10 years away, compared it to a quote from a European patent office that they were going to close because “everything has been invented.” Oh, and 70% of Paradox’s revenue is digital.

Fair dos to them, they've identified a niche and thoroughly exploited it. A lot of companies would kill for those sort of figures.

Wow! You weren't joking when you said overload. So much info! Looks like they're doing very well for themselves.

Have to give Salem a try, I'm intrigued although the actual death aspect sounds a bit evil.

and it seems like PCgamer is the only people to report on the event pretty much, just about no other site I have seen has reported on any of the games revealed.
