I don't understand why so many can't understand why Sony and Apple are up in arms about the dev community while MS isn't in regards to its WP7, whereas its just as aggresive on the X360.

Software.

Sony and Apple both create a lot of software on their hardware that they intend to generate money from. MS doesn't care if people open WP7 as its money is from the licensing of the OS to the hardware makers. Having WP7 open like a barn with no holds on the pirating doesn't affect them at all.

Its also not like Windows as you're not going to build your own phone and buy a new OS. The phone itself will only get the natural upgrades that all smartphones get from their OS maker ... (except Samsung's Galaxy S phones...)

So yeah MS can seem like the good guy by embracing the dev community (which Google has always done btw... hence open source) even while they are just as anit-open and anti-piracy as everyone else in every other market they are in.

This is all BS and the touting of MS in this case is cherrypicking and ignorant.

or they just know who to pick their battles with. Some hackers they wont need to worry about. Geohot is getting Sony freaked out enough to sue him. He changed the law in america to allow Jailbreaking. This guy has previous experience at pissing companies off.

Ms knows when and when not to battle someone.

If what I stated was true, (i dont know the full story obviously) but if it is true, then Yes it does change it from a PR stunt. If they are trying to make peace with a guy that is taking security away from numerous systems, that aint a pr stunt. That right there is logical.

The title of this thread says it all... Why dint they do this when the iphone got jailbroken? For that matter like the original post in this chain said why not with the 360? The only reason they are doing it now, is because this is such a hot issue.... This is dirt cheap PR and its working.... Its like people are blinded I swear....

MS is just trying to hang out with the "Cool Crowd" They know they got nothing they can do since by law you can Jailbreak phones.... so I don't really see what you guys are prasing MS for.... If I was Hotz I would actually be pissed there using me for publicity.  But we all know pirates have no souls.

No, your right they can't do anything so they would rather meet this guy head on and go look, you are gonna get one anyway, take your pick of the ones we have, here have a developer kit and tutorials. Have a ball.

As opposed to some companies simply trying to fight him, if you try to fight this guy, the track record is you will lose. Again MS is not stupid. They are a massive company for a reason.

I am not saying Apple and Sony are stupid, they just didnt have the track record. Sony thought they were safe because they hadnt been modded for 2-3 years. Apple is not stupid, they were the first attacked.

MS first version of the 360 was hacked, not to the extent of the ps3 now but it was so you could burn. They will pick their battles, it is not a pr stunt imo. It doesnt even sniff of it.
