Forums - Sony - Sony's next move in the fight against piracy, we all knew it'd come to this

The way the rumor is written doesnt make any sense. Activating the game through a phone call if your console isnt connected to the internet would still not work.  If something like this come around, sony will print each game disc with a unique number. Then you enter the number and it verifies on the disc. This is the only way it could work. This also mean there wouldnt be an activation limit.

Yes, it's all Sony's fault and George Hotz is an innocent little lamb who honesty expected that his CFW would prevent pirates from playing backups.

Sony would indeed be destroying its platform by doing nothing at all. Going the serial way might not stop piracy, but all these a**holes will at least be kept offline.

And yes, producing millions of keys is very possible, just ask Microsoft. The difference with the PC world is that Sony has a private network to protect. If the integrity of PSN is compromised, then the PS3 is finished.

*looks at PS2, Wii, DS, x360*

I don't get it...

You can't be serious. Piracy does have a significant impact on those platforms, it just doesn't hurt larger games because they are aimed at a more mainstream audience that have little to do with piracy.

Using the 360 and Wii as an example, games like Alan Wake, Dante's Inferno, Prototype, Dirt 2, Punch-Out!!, Red Steel 2 and Kirby's Epic Yarn have all been hurt by piracy. These are just some of the most downloaded games, so we don't know about all those other smaller releases that have come out throughout the years that could have suffered.

Due to how easy piracy is on the PS3 now (no need for hardware modifications) then it could be a much worse situation. I like that smaller releases like 3D Dot Game Heroes, Demons Soul's and White Knight Chronicles can sell well on the PS3 and I also like that games with strong single player campaigns (God of War 3, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Infamous and Heavy Rain) can survive in this market, the same can't be said for the 360 and Wii, which is pretty much a death-trap for shorter single player games and the niche. Piracy does affect the 360, Wii and even the PS2, just because the larger games can survive in that sort of situation, it doesn't mean that smaller releases have the same sort of chance at being at least profitable.

PIRACY DEFENSE SQUAD ACTIVATE!

but but piracy doesn't hurt games sales, look at black ops thats everything. Black ops=every game

this is just perfect. Hopefully this won't happen any time soon, but if it does bye bye ps3, off to ebay. Already need to deal with this shit with my PC because I don't pirate, and if my ps3 games become worthless once i buy them as well... But alas no official confirmation so till then I'll be enjoying some of the exclusives coming out in 2011.

How exactly do they become worthless? Can't you still play the games? What does it really change? You can even sell your new game on ebay after you finish it and give the extra 4 codes to the next one. If they don't work you'll get a bad rating.

Can someone explain this to me in dummy terms?

Its exactly like Steam's game cd key system. All digital, but all games have them. Internet required to activate a title.

So basically DRM on consoles?

Sucks for used sales thats for sure. Gamestop will sure complain to Sony.

I'm ok with it since 90% of my purchases are new titles.

It's just that simple.

I don't think this will happen..

Just imagine:

On E-Bay: PS3 - for 500$ - you can play this games also online - Killzone 1,2,3, Uncharted 1,2, God Of War etc.. (this wouldn't help Sony)..

So..let`s try to think about this :

1. Codes will be controlled by matching from blue-ray disk.. -> Nothing hard to create Keygens.

2. You will need to phone someone for enabling the game to play -> What if you live in a contry, where sony doesn't have a support ? Will i need to call in another language to an another country ? uff.. i don't like to see the bill then :(

3. PSN verifications -> there is a big problem.. -> As hackers have the master keys, it`s nothing really hard to pretend, that you have legit copy (see XBOX user, which have flashed xboxes and played till these days on live, but you need to flash your drive and so on-> So M$ have many more ways to see, if you have pirated the game.. SONY-No..if you have masterkeys, you can do everything without to by spooted) ..

4. Verification thru SONY servers or creators servers  -> Will it be really hard to make an emulator on a PS3, that would emulate activations ? I don't think so..

How can sony see, if you are pirating games.. (need to play online offcourse)

1. PATCHES - yes, you can patch a game then play it online - sony can check HASH(random files)

2. For now, you need to have un-original firmware - Sony have to find just a way, that you have an unofficial firmware - HASH, changed files and so on..

What if you are offline

There is NO CHANGE for sony, to stop PIRACY.. More people would like to play online than offline, so they WILL BUY games for the PS3. The serial method doesn't change everything and it only make legit customers angry..

There could be a changes, that you have to approve the game first online -> (see Lost Planet, Battlefield 2140 for PC).. But i don't think, this will happen..

The more I read the "console flamewars", the more i love my dreamcast :D

Proud owner of: Dreamcast, PSP, PSOne, PS2Slim, Xbox, Xbox360, Nintendo DSLite, GB color, GB Advanced, Nintendo Wii

So a ps3 game can only be used on 5 different ps3s?? If so that sucks balls...

What would they complain about, losing used game sales that Sony make no money from, and which, from Sony's point of view, costs them sales of new games?

So what does this do besides making people mad?  It's not like it'll stop people from using aimbots with legit games.  Can they even detect the subtle hacks, like walls and triggerbots with humanized aim?
