Team Fortress 2 is indeed good fun and an excellent game to start your on-line career. It welcomes amateurs but also provides enough to provide highly entertaining tournament style gaming.
I would suggest playing a game on public servers first. Games with dedicated servers such as Black Ops normally have servers which you can develop a rapport with the clan members and other regulars, it helps you understand them and if you would fit in. As you improve in skill you may then take it to the next level and find out what steps are needed to become a clan member. Once a clan member it will be your level of commitment and involvement that will mark out whether you become a success or not.
Being in clan can be very demanding. You will normally be expected to fit into some form of hierarchy, attend training and generally be an all round good egg. I think it is always best to join a well established clan if possible to ensure the structure is in place and reduce the squabbling, but they are often harder to gain entry.
This does kinda of mean you tend to lean towards one game as being your focus though. Get the right clan and you might find they have a number of sub clans in different game types that you can cross pollinate.
End of the day being part of a clan is about social engagement so enjoy it, if you find you do not then just go it alone. I cannot commit to a clan as the demands are too great. I do have my favourite servers though and I enjoy a bit of banter but I do not have any of the commitment which for me is a great way to enjoy on-line gaming.
