Forums - Sales - New Zealand Sony Hardware Sales (GfK).

I've tried Googling for Nintendo DS sales figures for New Zealand, but without much luck. This was quite surprising as Nintendo often give out sales figures for different countries when their consoles hit milestones. Fortunately I came across Sales figures for the PS2 and PSP with market share percentages, with those it's fairly simple to deduce Nintendo DS figures.

November - December 2006:

PlayStation 2 - 21,813 units = 70.9% of console market

PlayStation Portable - 9,560 units = 73% of handheld market

Which equals:

Nintendo DS 3,536 = 27% of handheld market

That equates to 1,768/month, which is less than the PS3 sold in November this year. In actuality sales should be significantly higher in December than in November, so last years DS November sales would have been lower than 1,768. It turns out that the DS just isn't very popular in New Zealand.

I also come across a few LTDs which may help to put the previous figures into context.

2006 (End)

PlayStation 2 - 400,000

2005 (End)

PlayStation 2 - 350,000
Xbox - 140,000
Gamecube - 10,000

This would put PS2 at 436,000 + Jan - Mar 07, so somewhere around 450,000.

If you look at New Zealand chart you will see it's PlayStation 2 land:
1. High school musical bundle (ps2)
2. High school musical (S/W) (ps2)
3. Smackdown vs raw 2008 (ps2)
4. The Simpson game (ps2)
5. Singstar Rnb (S/W) (ps2)
6. Need for speed pro street (ps2)
7. Buzz Hollywood Quiz (S/W) (ps2)
8. Halo 3 (xbox 360)
9. Call of Duty 4: Modern (ps3)
10. Need for speed pro street (ps3)

No DS and now Wii titles but complete domination of PS2. PSP also has no title on the list but this is normal, PSP doesn't sell much software anyway. So I think it's possibly that Sony product occupy 3 first places on NZ hardware sales.

Damn Sony casual games ruining gaming!!!1

Well, I stand corrected. Looks like Sonyland has moved from Spain to New Zealand. Although, Spanish PS3 sales last week were higher than NZ LTD. So might not be a huge coup.

Interesting though, I thought kiwi tastes were similar to Australia, kind of like how Canada was a mini USA. But they're pretty much polar opposites.

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

Australia is generally ignored as a market - its just to small to really count. NZ is a fraction the size of the Australian market...

Is there even a "Nintendo of NZ" - or does Nintendo Australia act for them?

Don't know about Nintendo but there is Sony New Zealand.

Wow, a land where DS fails.

Also Sony will have an office set up for every major country, they make a lot more than Playstations after all.

Exacatly speaking it is SCENZ or Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand, so it's specializing in video games.

ooooh i can tell ya. Im kiwi.. and well sony is dominant in the console war (since the PSX & PS2) but i am surprised to see that the PS3 is on top i would have thought the 360 would be on top.

About the DS being beaten.... well its probably true. The PSP has sold fantastically from launch. The DS has just been seen by kids as the 'New' thing to have this christmas as the PSP was the last.

And no there is no Nintendo NZ were just run by Nintendo Australia. But there is a Sony NZ and Microsoft NZ.

feel free to add me whenever (just PM me to let me know)

The country, and especially the gaming population of it is so small it doesn't matter to anyone, (no offenses to kiwis).
