Sony Preparing January 27th PSP2 Announcement in Tokyo

01/12/2011 Written by Anthony Severino

While the PlayStation Phone has stolen quite a bit of the limelight lately, don’t forget that the PSP2 is presently being developed. Dev units of the device have already begun making their to various studios, and both plenty of pics and information have been leaked. It’s only a matter of time before it’s revealed… but how much time exactly? Sooner than anyone could have expected.

Due to real, reliable information being so scarce, many assumed that the successor to Sony’s PlayStation handheld would be held for an announcement at the E3 Expo later this year. Instead, industry sources are telling various outlets that Sony is holding a press event in Tokyo, Japan on January 27th. At the press event it’s said Sony will drop a PSP2 shaped bomb on the gaming industry.

This would actually be smart business strategy, considering the fact that the Nintendo 3DS is launching in Japan in March, and is likely going to eat away at the original PSPs sales. Sony could effectively deter some of the excitement over the 3DS launch by announcing what could be a far more powerful device.

One thing is for sure — we’ll bring you all the information as it happens.

Wasn't it revealed like... months ago? Heck, there's a pic of it in the OP >___>

well SONY's biggest market for the PSP2 is Japan, and with Japan already feasting on the 3DS he doesn't want the PSP community in Japan to buy the 3DS and not the PSP2 that could come out later in the year.

So announcing now would mean that an large chunk of the Japanese market (mainly PSP owners) will wait it out for the PSP2 and the rest of the world will be be given the decision to get either the PSP2 or the 3DS which is looking to be the same price since Nintendo is upping the price due to excitement and the 3D screens being expensive. And if that is the case then SONY could have the upper hand offering the PS3 experience on the go where PS3 owners would buy and even 360 owner who wants the latest line up of PS3 exclusives without having to buy an PS3

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Finally - - I got  tired of ending evey conversation with "it's not even announced yet, so no point talking about it now" in 3DS threads

I hope they do release something really powerful, it would show they hadn't learnt the lesson from the PSP and PS3.

What exclusive software could it possibly have? KH, FF, Resi, SF, MGS, DQ Ridge Racer and a lot of Nintendo software will be hard to match.
