Forums - General - A Game of Thrones: Books / TV series

Anyone hyped for this? I really like the books and am pretty excited about how the TV show is shaping up. I watch bugger all TV these days, what with gaming and hanging out on gaming forums. But this series will be a must watch.

getting bloody tired of waiting for the next book in the series to arrive, but apparently it's gonna be submitted to the editors very soon, so TV series season 1 and bopok 5 coming out in the same year sounds like a great plan to me.

Can you tell me why I should be interested? I don't have sound on my PC as I broke it.

Tease.

When I first heard about it I was very suspicious we'd get a very watered down version - what with the gritty settings, the tapestry of characters and occasionally depressing plot turns, but I suppose HBO has taken enough risks in the past that I can somewhat trust them (still mourning Carnivàle, though).

I'm still curious (or even dubious) about the adapting they might need to make it work in an episodic structure, as for everything I like in the books they certainly don't have an even pacing. All in all, though, looking forward to it :)

The best fantasy series you will ever read and I have read quite a few with my now 2nd most favorite (after A Song of Ice and Fire) being the series featuring Drizzt Do'Urden from R.A. Salvatore.

A Song of Ice and Fire is, in my opinion, the best fantasy novel series ever. A Game of Thrones is the first book and one of the presents I got from Christmas.

This is not a tale of dragons, elves, dwarves, and Gods coming back down to Earth as avatars. This series does include dragons (not in the treasure hoarding, omnipotent sense), but it is heavy on the double dealing, incestuous "every word you say can be your last" politics of a kingdom in the middle ages.

I highly recommend the books beginning with A Game of Thrones.

Oh, you should be interested. When I read these books I was like, wow, wow, wow. At one point I was so shocked by what happened I stopped reading for 5 minutes because I could not believe what happened. Awesome story. But, I gather this will be hard to capture into live action. We shall see.

You could say that whole book is already almost custom made for episodic content with all the cliff hangers beetween chapters and jumps to other characters.

While I don't think it is the best fantasy series (Malazan is, specially because the series were actually finished. Thank you for honoring the compromises with your readers, mr. Steven Erikson!), ASOAIF is indeed an achievement in fantasy literature, taking it away from the nerdy hands of Eragon, D&D and the like which are watered down clones of Tolkien's work.

My only issues with it are:

- Good things never happen to the good guys. I know villains must be smart, but come the fuck on. No need to nihilism.

- The Starks are retards. The second time I read AGOT I wondered how a feudal lord could be so dumb, that guy and his double standards of honor walked willingly into his own doom. Seems like even an author like Martin surrendered to using the 'plot sword'. Besides, there are three characters who clearly have plot armor there.

- The giant wolves. My God, what a disappointment these wolves were to me.

Look at George RR Martin's blog, he has a very deep implication in this serial. The choice of the actors is to me, very accurate. Seems it will be close to the book, so indeed awesome.

Oh , by the way, the guys at Cyanide (Blood Bowl) are working on a RTS based on AGOT.

I dont think releasing novels on a close to yearly basis (as Erikson has managed to do) means the series is any better. Overall, I think A Song of Ice and Fire has a slightly more gripping and engaging storyline than the Malazan Book of the Fallen, but they are both amazing :)
