Forums - Gaming - 3rd party Move and Kinect strategy

lol, welcome to Nintendo's world.  More derivative casualware and motion grafted core reissues that you'll know what to do with. ;)

Honestly, the only near exciting 3rd party stuff on either is probably the Japanese 360 stuff, and all that's still being made on Microsoft's dime anyway.  Seems many developers would literally rather die than explore new markets, sadly. :/

Essentially 3rd party development strategy:

Kinect: Support in a moderate fashion with a few exclusive titles bankrolled somewhat by Microsoft. Take heart in the fact that Kinect is approaching the 15-20M userbase level quickly where exclusive but limited support is justifiable. Justify further investment because of the idea that all consoles will use some form of camera interface in the next generation and this generation will last longer than ever before because all CEOs of the big 3 have told you quietly that is what is to be expected.

Move: Wii ports on PSN, tacked on controls in other games. PSN games which support Move. No need to target many individual titles in this direction as the userbase isn't large enough, most Wii titles not even worth the effort to port given printing and other expenses. All 3rd party Move games will support the controller which limits what can be done with Move. If Sony vastly increases the sales rate it'd probably be too late to drum up support as next generation titles will be on the drawing boards already.

From my own experience with the systems, I would say the Move is a much better piece of hardware than the controls for the Wii. That being said, Sony is failing to put the Move to use in going after the Blue Ocean whom Wii Sports, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit have accounted for more than 48 million in software sales in 2010 alone, eventhough neither of them was released in 2010.

My fear is that Sony has bought into the "core" wholesale and it will be the undoing of the Move. If you take a look at the Move's lineup of games, a lot of the games seem to cater to the core. The problem with this is, the core will not make exclusives 20 plus million sellers like Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

Hell for Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops to sell 15 to 20 million, they needed to be multiplatform. This in of itself speaks volumes on how unreliable the core is as a customer base.

I thought we would have learned from the failures of Atari and Sega on why console companies should never cater to the core at the expense of the family. Looks like Sony is in for a rude reminder with the Move.

As for games better fitting each platform, Kinect has the edge here. Imagine a Kinect Fit requiring no control in one's hands and along the lines of Wii fit. Easily a 20 million seller and overshadowing any Call of Duty game so much that people forget it even exists, just like many "core" gamers forget that Wii Sports was the 2nd best selling game of 2010 eventhough it was released in 2006. Same with Wii Fit selling 8.87 million in 2010 more than 2 years after it's release

thats because they were bundled with almost every console that was sold. ist the same with wii play its the same cost as a controller so almost everyone who buys a second controller gets a game for free. ok in case of wii play you play it one time and it goes into the trash.

on topic its kinda hard to create a kinect game with move in mind they are to different so 3rd partys shoud go with exclusive games for each device.

if there are move and wii compatible games i wont bother about them because most times the graphic wil be so crappy that i dont want to play the game

Lets be consistent here if you are using the "they only sell because they are bundled" argument. The most aggregious abuser of "they only sell because they are bundled" argument is the entire Gran Turismo series.

Do you hold the same for Gran Turismo games that were bundled as Wii Sports and Kinect Adventures are for the Wii and 360?

i think its a bit different gran turismo has surely gained a lot of sales by being bundled but going by the VGchartz numbers there are 14.89 million copies sold of gran turismo 3 for example on i dont know about 150 mio ps2 which makes an attach rate of about 10 %. wii sports is bundled as far as i know with every console that is sold except in japan so there should be about 70 mio wii sports on about 80 mio wiis thats attach rate is about 80 or 90%. you cant compare that. but that wasnt the point i wanted to make.  what really bothered me with your statement was this sentence:  just like many "core" gamers forget that Wii Sports was the 2nd best selling game of 2010 eventhough it was released in 2006.

if the game wasnt bundled it wouldnt even be on a list in 2010 because it would have just a few 10.000 or a few 100.000 sales  (which is totally fine for a 4 year old game) but all core gamers would laugh at the 2010 sales it wouldnt probably be in any top 30 or 50 sale list for 2010.

Seems to make sense.  We will also see more Wii/Kinect games.  And expect to see some Kinect/Move/Wii games and maybe so Kinect/Move games.  There is also the chance that the Game of the Year type editions will be Move/Kinect compatible.

It's not a well..Gran Turismo 3 has sold a lot on it's own. We don't know that because Gran Turismo 3 was bundled. I have used the "it only sold because it was bundled" argument in the past. It is an entirely fallacious and weak argument to use considering how many big titles have been bundled in the past.

You are right, we cannot tell if a game that was bundled and sold would have sold just as well on it's own. Without the individual sales data vs. bundled data for the bundled game, we do not know. This holds for Gran Turismo 3 when it was bundled, Halo 3 when it was bundled, and Wii Sports.

I error on the side of caution and say a sale is a sale regardless of whether it was bundled or not. Otherwise, I would just get myself entangled into neverending console wars arguments.

Imo use the normal 3rd party that would otherwise come to both PS3 and 360 and just tack on move support.. And develop an exclusive every now and then primarily for Move and Kinect, it's like this. You're standing in a supermarket and you're a dual console owner, you're torn between picking up the PS3 version of COD or the 360 version of COD, buuuuuutt.. the PS3 version of COD happens to have Move support, so that's a slight advantage in it's favour I guess.

For Kinect it's other matter, not having Bluray amount of space means less content on disks, so if you want to make a game Kinect compatible it'll probably take even longer to rehash it. Kinect games should mainly be exclusive to Kinect with maybe few exceptions slipping to Move. What I like about Move is the fact that you can use standard controller anyway, I don't think there are any Kinect games out yet that allow you to do that. Time will tell, maybe developers will figure something out.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I think the move is a much more advanced piece of technology vs. the Kinect. There a couple of games coming out soon that I feel should be played with the Move. Killzone 3, Resident Evil, and probably Dead Space ..
