Forums - Gaming - Will Microsoft/Sony announce Wii-like controllers in 08'?

And if they do, will that stop all Wii momentum? I don't know if I see Sony doing it, as they seem to be the more stubborn of the two companies, but I really think you could see Microsoft doing it. It's clear to see how much people are warming up to this "new" way to interact with games, and it opens up a whole new world in terms of potential customers.

What would that mean for the Wii? The Xbox already has an SKU that could compete with the Wii price-wise, so with an advanced motion sensing controller and downloadable games like Wii-sports, could that spell trouble for the Wii?

While SMG was a very good game, the Wii still seems to have the worst attach rate of the three consoles, how could the Wii compete with the Xbox being superior on every technical front.

As far as patents go, I'm sure Microsoft's legal team could find a way to create a controller without causing a lawsuit.

So, by releasing an expensive poorly supported add on for a system they're going to reduce sales for the Wii?

no i dont think they will make motion like controls because then they would have to make all the games available now work with motion controls

Well if you had to choose between motion sensing with good graphics and motion sensing with great graphics for the same price, I would assume you would go for the one with good graphics.

And what do you mean by poorly supported?

I really don't think MS would, I am pretty sure they feel like the Wii60 thing is working well for them right now and they don't want to risk damaging their image being a "copycat" of their competition and especially not without doing it right (preferably better).

But more than that the reason it works with the Wii is because it is the basic controller and not just another peripheral. Developers likely wouldn't make much use of it unless the sales were amazing enough to justify it (which they likely wouldn't be). In general this is the sort of the thing that has to be planned from the start or it probably won't work.

Sony has some similar reasons not to do it as well.

see my point about not being the basic controller and not having enough of a userbase to justify developing for it.

100% of Wii games Will support the Wiimote because that is the only controller you can assume the owner of the system has.

~1% of XBox 360/PS3 games would support their Wiimote because you would have to assume the owners of the PS3/XBox 360 games did not have the Wiimote. Consider how many PS2 games took advantage of the Eye-Toy.

Why couldnt they make new games that make it work? If they quietly announced it sure, but its not like its the Wii games that people are going crazy for. If they make a game like Wii sports, and announce it at a huge press event I dont see why it would make a difference.

Every bit of news travels quickly on the internet now, so as long as they hype it up well enough and design it well enough, reviews would come through and people would buy it.

The Wii's formula is not complicated at all. They are just the only ones doing it at the moment. It wouldnt be expensive to create either.

I dont want it to happen, the wii mote is not as good as the dual shock 3.

It doesnt have to be their main controller either.

Making a game like Wii-sports or Wii play, I would imagine would be pretty easy on an Xbox360. They could release games on the XBLA that could use motion sensing. With 10 games with low graphics this could be done by next fall. Release it as a motion sensing bundle and there you have it.

They could make bundles that include the controller, and those that have the classic controller.
