Forums - Sony - Glad I didn't buy it. DCU Online require 15GB?!

Dunno why an install is such a big deal. It's a one off thing, do it overnight while you're sleeping.

Monthly subs is a different story, and I'm not up for that no matter how good a game looks.

For $60 you should get the first 3 months free.

Paying for an MMO is not a big deal people, get over it. Such a big install is something else. It's kind of normal for an MMO, but then again this is a PS3 game. I remember EQOA on the PS2 only requiring 3MB's, so they have been kind of lazy there. I really wanna try this game, but I know it's gonna be too addicting and I barely have time as it is now.

Truly shocking MMO requires gigantic install and monthly fee. More news at 11.

So not only does this title ask you to pay $15/month, but it also asks for 15GB of your HDD space.

1.) It's only $15

2.) Doesn't MMORPGs usually require a good amount of space to play?

No, the game is $60 to start, then you install 15GB, then you pay another $15. People whine about Live costing $60/year, including me, but $180/year for just 1 game is SO much worse.

Your 1st year of DCU Online will cost you $240. No defending that.

I have always felt that pay-to-play titles should be free to begin with. Free to download, then pay to play.

Why pay to get it and then pay again just to play? DCU Online is a ripoff and I love watching Pay-2-Play stuff fall on it's face.

As for your 2nd point. Like the article mentions, they have 50GB of space on a dual layered BD disk, why need to install 30% of it? PS3 isn't a PC.

Look at WoW: $40 for initial payment then $15 a month if you pay month to month, and something cheaper on a "per month" scale if you buy for like 3 or 6 months. Just like PS Plus and XBL. It's always the most expensive if you pay month to month.

First month isn't free? That's stupid.

Yes it is.

Also, it's $15/month if you pay one month at a time.  If you buy more months at a time, it's cheaper.  There's an option where you can buy a year for something like $130 and then a lifetime pass for $199.

Also, the PC version had a day one patch that was 12GB 8.8GB.

-edit-

don't know where I got 12 from, it was 8.8 (which I remember because I was stuck at 8.7 for a good long while).

I'm tired of people saying $15 is normal...

the question is WHY! just because that's where MMOs started? Cell phones used to be as big as houses and cost $800 now you can get one as cheap as $15, LCDs used to run $1000 for the smallest size now you can get one at $100 and that's after only a few years... and guess what servers used to cost thousands of dollars even as recently as 2004 when WOW came out but now 7 years you can get laptops and PCs for under $300, and servers for under $1000.

That being said in this day and age servers are easier to maintain, they cost less to buy, their parts are cheaper and add that to the fact many games update their products via DLC... and they get compensated for those updates  by selling them, so any updates could have easily been maintained by micro-transactions to offset the cost. But even if they wanted to charge a monthly fee, why $15... just because MMOs started at $15 a month years ago? that is NOT REASONABLE today.

Why be a sheep and say that's what it always been so it's fair. The "why not" is because there is no valid reason for that price anymore... or maybe ever, who's to say it was even to offset any server cost and not just an arbitrary figure MMO companies pulled out their ass? The one thing we do know is, the economy is crap right now and servers cost less to buy and are easier to maintain so why not make it $5 a month just for those reasons.

Anyway the SOLE reason I did not and will not buy it is because  of the price. I can't afford $15 a month on nonsense but even if I could, after 7 years that's way too much

But updating the actual game for the vulnerabilities doesn't cost any less then years before. Actually, it probably costs much more than ever before. Programming doesn't cost much less than it before, only technology does. Now, probably more money in cheap cell phones goes to software rather than hardware.

First off the programming cost may or may not be less, while the programmers rate themselves may be constant the technologies to program may become easier, more well known, more wide spread thus more resources for the updates and require less man power due to said technology (this happens often as I am a programmer)

However that is besides the point, as stated any updates could theoretically be taken care of as in any NON MMO game, paying for the updates, using micro-transactions or other methods of on access payment. Also as stated, with the reduced cost of the technologies I'm not saying that it necessarily should be free, just reduce the cost of the of the monthly fee; I'm not a fool many MMOs have MILLIONS of players but let's just say an MMO only get's one hundred thousand users, at $5 a month that is 6 million dollars EVERY year... 60 million if you have 1 million subscribers. Are you trying to tell me 6 to 60 million dollars can't cover these update cost? Of course it could everything else is just greed and I personally won't promote that if you want to that is your choice, but it hurts you as well.

My probs with DCUO:

1) According to the OP, you have to download 15GB. WTF is blu-ray for? I'm fine with 15GB, I made space for 16GB when I was playing the beta and it's updates. I just want to know why that content isn't on the disc...

2) Why does PC get price deals and PS3 doesn't? I'll love a life time membership for 199... Hell, atleast give us a price option for a full year...i haven't purchased yet as I don't have the time but i'd like to get this game someday.

sony is probably using the cell processor servers, theyre supposed to be wayyy more efficient than the way servers used to be, but the cost of servers will pretty much stay static, other than the hardware.  what theyre paying for is electricity, servers run the same way as your computer does, with electricity.  electric charges constituting 1's and 0's.  they also have to cool the servers

what the majority of your money goes to is the people who continually add new content to the game.
