I've been waiting for the Verizon iPhone for about a year now myself as I live in San Francisco, one of the worst data congested cities on AT&T's 3G network, but with the finalized details now available, it looks like the only benefit is being able to switch carriers.
The simultaneous voice and data isn't a dealbreaker for me but it's pretty obvious that the data bandwidth restrictions of 3G network speeds are what's preventing this.
So it's wait for a 4G iPhone in another 6-12 months (AT&T will likely get it a good 6 months before Verizon) or renew for another 2 years with AT&T 3G or 2 years with Verizon 3G.
It may just boil down to which carrier provides the better package at the better price.
I could always get a 4G Android phone, but since I'm not anti-Apple and never have been, it's doubtful I'd be instantly won over and run the risk of being stuck with Android OS for the next 2 years when I've been nothing but satisfied with iOS for the last 2 plus years.
