Because the first time anyone faces him, they try to tackle him head to head.
It's not only through a process of trial and error that you actually find that he's a bit of a pushover, if you know where and how to tackle him.
Now Flamelurker...that's godly xD.

well, unlike most people, when i saw the archers, i thought to myself "hey i'll kill those archers first so then me and the boss be 1 on 1" and then i figured him out easily.

Yeah, most people would only realize that those archers were the actual nuisance in the battle, after dying a couple of times.
I died on my first time because, after killing the archers, I was trying to pick up some of the Herbs as my stock was pretty low, and TK killed me with his charged sword throw attack. On my second try, I went straight for his back after dispatching the archers and the fight was pretty manageable.

Are you badass enough to do an entire playthrough on NGplusplus on Pure Dark (Both CT and WT)?

I did it because I was trying to see the overall impact of the increase in amount of souls you would gather in a single playthrough when you were Pure Black in both tendencies.
The soul gain is massive (120% increase over a Neutral CT and WT), I increased from SL 123 to 170 in that playthrough alone (it also helped to choose to take the "dark" path at the end, 300K souls is nothing to scoff at).
Also, I had left a lot of Pure Black exclusive events to do in later playthroughs because I didn't knew about them until I was on NGplus. I tried to do all Pure White in NGplus and left all Pure Black to NGplusplus, since I was far more experience than when I first tried NGplus.
It was quite a shock, the first time I did NGplus.... I was expecting a challenge, but seeing how easy phalanx could destroy me, made me very wary
