Forums - Sales - Kinect's early success is a referendum on Nintendo.

Kinect isn't going to do anything in Japan because Japan hates american hardware & software. The only thing they love from America is the Ipod and Ipad. So don't expect many sales in that market. Where Microsoft needs to market hard in is the EMEA regions. That already gone America. They just need the games and it'll surge forward with no problem. In EMEA, it will be a harder task. This year is going to be interesting.

They also love Donkey Kong Country Returns! :D

I think that Wii's continued success during the holidays proved that the general public buys what they "heard about".  Kinect came too late to the holiday season to have a large amount of people communicate their want for it.  2011 holidays will determine what is what when grandma and grandpa know what kinect is.  As far as the Wii failing at anything, i don't think so.  They did what they set out to do.  If you want the upgrade from what they have you buy the kinect.  I am sure that Kinect's success will definitely push Nintendo to get going on Wii2 or WiiHD sooner rather than later. To me, the bigger joke is the Move.  It is only a lateral move(no pun intended), just a copy of Wii tech.  I think that it is good for gaming in general for every console to have the motion option, but not required.

I agree with you somewhat, but all your points are pretty much true of the move as well, the main differences between move and kinect is move works better and is more accurate and kinect has the wow factor (not sure how seeing how eye toy had controller free gaming years ago...), hype and advertising behind it, so while I agree with you that nintendo made the market and they are going over to kinect I think they are only going over to kinect because of the advertisement and without it they would probably stay with wii

Nintendo has simply moved on to other things, while remaining one step ahead of MS. While MS tries to mimic the Wii games popular four years ago with Kinect Sports and Kinect Adventures, and a year old dance game with Dance Central, Nintendo is now shifting from the non gamer and focusing more on the ex-gamer with old school type platformers like NSMB and Donkey Kong Country. And it is working. If MS TRUELY wants to capture the Wii audience, they must not go just for the non gamer, because that is only a fraction of the Wii audience. They must also go for the lapsed gamer, with a solid 2D platformer. Though I don't see MS ever doing this. I don't see MS with the ability to make a great 2D platformer, let alone one that is near the quality of Mario or DKC.

Nintendo are also using uinque technologies that set them appart like the Udraw (well its technically third party), balance board, and the soon to be Vitality Sensor, things that MS does not have. Kinects success only targets a small fraction of the Wii userbase, which is why Wii sales remain strong despite an amazing start for Kinect. They will need more than a Wii Sports type game and a Dance game to maintain that success.

In the month of Nov the 360 only out sold the Wii by 100,000 systems. The total was 1.37 to 1.27 systems. Out of the 1.37 360 systems sold only 700,000 where 360 Kinect bundles. So we can believe only 700,000 are new 360 owners of first timers. When Dec numbers come in only then will we tell the full impact of Kincet. If the Wii out sold the 360 in Dec. Then Kinect had on affect at all. If the 360 out sold the Wii then it depends on how many were new Kinect Bundles.

Their has been a lot of Kinect standalone units sold to already owners of the 360. People who already bought a Wii as a second system or never had plans too. Until it proven that Microsoft have gain 8 million new users. Kinect has done nothing to Nintendo, and their Wii audience.

Remember according to the site Wii games like Just Dance, Part 2, and Michael Jackson are out selling Kinect games.  So where is this proof that Kinect has stolen Nintendo's Audience.

I will say this Nintendo has always been a company that creates the movement. They give you the blueprints, and show you how to do it. Then it's up to you to make something happen. If Nintendo made all the content like the usually do. 3rd parties would just be crying about not having a chance. Because Nintendo plays the tutor role. Ubisoft can try to create games like Red Steel 2. EA can focus on Tiger and Tennis games. If Nintendo made a Mario Tennis or Golf with Wii Motionplus. Would anyone go and buy EA games? NO! This goes into the reason Zangkei never game over here. At he time it launched it would have hurt the sells of Red Steel 2. Which still sold for crap here. Due to priacy, and gamers feeling upset about buying the first game!

I think that Motion-gaming Is already a reality for Nintendo they came out and created a new genre that very few people thought it would be succesful, Xbox is trying to jump in the bandwagon It's not the first time Nintendo paves the way for a new wave of gaming, Remember how everyone loved Miis and 2 years later Xbox came out with "Avatars"? Now, I admit that Kinect is being succesful but It's mainly because some gamers see it as the next step after the Wii. I for one am not 100% sure Kinect can stay relevant for a long period of time, after all a controller in your hands DOES give a lot more options instead of controller-free, I mean will microsoft release a new Halo via Kinect? Gears of war? unlikely. and trying to duplicate Nintendo can only take Microsoft so far since it doesn't have the franchises that are so well recognized and combined the motion-controlling gaming in an almost perfect way, now of course I can definetly be wrong and kinect might be the next big thing, Time will tell.

This will be the last year nintendo will lack motion titles or atleast is seems

Nintendo will get motion plus games ready this year. That's the holiday games this year. Motion plus games that's what e3 will be about

That's when wii sales will go up

@metallicube  making updates to their old as hell properties is not "moving on to new things" its not like Donkey Kong or Mario or new IPs or concepts.  non-gamer is a fraction of the Wii audience??? really, thats funny considering that most of the casual games far outsell those of the core games on Wii. Id say that the non-gamer (grandmas, girlfriends, soccer moms, people who dont usually game at all) take up at least half of the Wii audience. If that wasnt true games like Just Dance would flop hard. Im curious what do you consider to be the biggest audience on Wii? dont say Ninty fans because if that were true the GC would have done much better.

MS may not be a good 1st party dev house like Ninty but on Xbox live they have quite a few good platformers, nobody is going to usurp Mario from his platforming throne, that guy is too old and synomous with the genre. Ms can and will make good platformers on Live but not at retail. Your not going to sell a 2d platformer to the 360 audience at full price, not gonna happen. Most HD gamers are going to look at the price and game and say "hell no, you gotta give me more than that if you want my money"

Id agree with you on Ninty's add-ons but as ive seen this gen, they dont really support them, WiiSpeak just got canned, balance board is only used for a handful of mostly exercise games and Motion barely gets any support. Your right about Kinect needing more than sports and exercise clones, you can only make so many of those games, people arent that stupid

How can they both mimic Nintendo and take a divergent path at the same time? If the Wii sales remain strong it is because they aren't actually selling directly to the same people, theres no real competition between them as of now.

Also who are you to say what kind of market they should or should not target?

Anyway, chances are pretty good that Microsofts overall Xbox 360 revenue is either about = with or > than the Nintendo Wii. Nothing you say will change the fact that at present they are successful with Kinect.
