I think the PS3 is fine where it is.
It is profitable.
They have/are selling millions.
The gamers are having a great time.

It needs its own identity. Let me explain:
PS2 was technically speaking, the weakest of all 3 consoles last gen, but people loved it, devs found it easy to work with, and it was very affordable. It was like the Toyota Corolla of the gaming systems - anyone who wanted one went with it - it was reliable, affordable, and had all the features anyone wanted.
Enter the PS3. It was WAY tech heavy and ridicuoulsy overpriced at launch. Sony was proud and vain, and in turn, abandoned their economically-minded fans. It definitely outmatched the other consoles as far as raw technology goes, but it was too much for many to afford. The new economic choice was the Wii, which was offering a whole new way to play games. This allured a big chunk of the old PS2 fanbase. The PS3 had changed Sony's image into something the old PS2 fans didn't like.
Sony continued to throw barbs at Nintendo verbally, which just made them seem more arrogant, and kept people away from them, like the emo kid in high school.
Then the PS3, after all the crap-talking, decided to pretty much mimick Nintendo's motion controls with some added technology, trying to lure back the fans lost to Nintendo. It became a case of "Me too" moreso than an original idea. The old lost PS2 fans are hoping for Sony to bring something original to the table, but haven't.
Sony, and especially the PS3, needs its own identity, for something that the fans can latch on to. Nintendo has motion controls and several original IPs, Microsoft has Xbox Live and a few original IPs like Halo as its beacon, plus a whole new method of motion controls. Sony has some good titles, but nothing really with a "wow" factor to lure people in.

Well it needs time in order to hit the other countries which do not have a PS3 yet, like middle eastern counties. I think I remember reading about how they contributed quite a lot to PS2 sales. This would get it over the 360, but unlikely for the wii.

I mean, a new or existing IP that clones the gameplay of Mario but does a better job than Nintendo did. And it would have a big impact because NSMB Wii did and the market demand won't have an outlet on Wii or (3)DS this year yet clearly is still there.
It just wouldn't be the 'kind' of audience you would want the PS3 to have. I would say there is no way to acclerate PS3 sales without attracting some kind of new audience not currently served by the games on it, and that's the biggest.
"It needs an identity" is the spot-on answer by Raze.
Fanboys LOVE the commercials where "it only does everything" for obvious reasons - - but I don't think they really have for the mainstream. People who aren't "gamers" want to know exactly what they are buying and what it does, which is why a Wii-mote or a Kinect or a Live to grasp on to is effective. It's also why Blu_Ray was an effective motivator early on before stand-alone BluRay players got so commonplace and relatively cheap.
I really do think PS3 has an indentity crisis this gen.
