Forums - Sony - Sony to buy Imax for $2.5 billion?

it was good but eh nothing a normal theater screen cant handle , just bigger screen lol ,

Actually, the bigger screen requires a lot of factors that the IMAX film does. If the resolution wasn't bumped up considerably, a bigger screen would make a projected film look like a blurry mess.

IMAX also has a much faster framerate (I cannot recall, but I think it's 60fps vs a regular cinemas 24fps) to reduce the effects of strobing on a much bigger screen when panning.

A film shot on IMAX format is shot on 70mm film instead of 35mm. It is also shot at 48fps instead of 24fps.

Ofcourse most films that run in IMAX theaters are just upconverted regular movies. So you just get a bigger screen.

However most theatres have changed to digital projection using 2K projectors. 2048x1080, pretty much blu-ray resolution. Ofcourse the movie you see in the cinema has a lot less compression. They run at max 250mbps, compared to blu-ray's max sustained 40mbps for picture.

IMAX digital cinema currently uses 4K projectors, 4096x2060.

The 70mm prints easily offer 8k resolution which is the next step for digital IMAX projectors. Just as 4k is better for 35mm. A film shot on 35mm and mastered in 4k for an IMAX screen will look sharper then in a regular cinema using 2k projectors.

Best quality is still watching a 70mm film on a 70mm projector, no compression, full resolution.

Imax Corp. shares cooled rapidly Friday after the company denied that Sony Corp. was readying a blockbuster takeover bid for the Mississauga-based movie screen operator. LINK

I dont think they are.

If there is no Imax in your city of course you're gonna think no one goes to the Imax. But in a city where there are Imax theaters (like here in Los ANgeles) people do prefer to go when it comes to blockbuster movies like the Dark Knight. It's a much better experience.

Nice, I've seen several movies in IMAX. I prefer it over 3D.
