For me, I've rented a couple games to just get the trophies for them and found that I actually really enjoyed the game to boot. Several times I've stopped and thought to myself, "I probably wouldn't have played this game normally".

Well then, surely they've done their jobs then no? The idea behind it to get that boost persuaded you to play these games, so the company makes more money.

That's a good thing

I'd say yes and no.

From a gamer's perspective, yes, that's a great thing.

But from a business perspective, well, that anecdote reinforces a rental environment, don't you think?

From a business perspective I think they value achievements because it lets them know how far the average gamer advanced in their game. I.E. was there a huge drop off at a certain level. Then they can examine that level and try to improve their next game to avoid similar drop offs.

That's just a very simple example.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Obligatory dick measuring Gaming Laptop Specs: Sager NP8270-GTX: 17.3" FULL HD (1920X1080) LED Matte LC, nVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M, Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3, 750GB SATA II 3GB/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive

I like offline trophies, I hate online trophies (especially create/share ones).

Sometimes I get obsessed with them. I created 10 extra accounts to get some trophies on Modnation Racers and LBP, then I was like "Why am I doing this?" but I can't ignore them, damn OCD.

Achievements have been useless because the definition is completely mis-used.

I love them for the fact that they are great reminders of the game itself.  I can go back and look at achievements for any particular game and be reminded of many of the things I did.

To collect them as a "score" I suppose its one of the only things left in gaming today that represents a game "score"

Same here, great way to browse through all the games I've played.

Throphies / achievements for completing chapters is also useful to see how far your friends are in a certain game. Check their progress first before spoiling half the game for them by asking how they got by something later on.

The only game in which achievements actually made sense for progress was Test drive unlimited. The achievements gave you the xp you needed to level. I would be nice if more games actually integrated them in the game instead of just tacking them on to certain events.

Hmm... never thought of it like that before...

yea I bought King Kong and actually it wasn't half bad, just sometimes annoying with them always making me save everyone else. However I think achievements that are to hard ruin a game. For instance, GTA IV. Play the whole game and also do extra for 300 achievement points, what a joke. Some help to give replay value but some are just a joke how much you have to do. Some Tiger Woods is plagued with these achievement issues. I Think games like Oblivion got it right, knowing the game is very long you can get them all within the side quests and main quests in one play through

I think this can stop sales too, If achievements are just way to hard to get. I think that playing through the game should get you atleast half the achievements of the game. If you want to make them play it on hard fine but then it comes down to how good the gameplay is. If it is hard to control then this can ruin the game as well. So if your game is just ok, then make the achievements easier. The better the game the more you can raise the bar.

Like lost planet, I won't even play it because the achievements are just to hard for the game. Not really so much hard but they are a lot of online and if your online sucks then who wants to play to get them, no one. You are right though achievements are addictive and should be chosen wisely. If not, it can ruin the game or just make you feel ripped off.

OH YEA, secret achievements are just stupid. I go online and read them right away, so what the point? To get me online, that will happen anyway.

This. Oblivion has the best acheivements on any game for me, made me want to play and finish al side-quests.

But acheivements which you get for advancing with the story are stupid, especially if more than half of them are like this.

Similarly, online-only acheivements puts people who can't go online at a disadvanage

Also-Bioshock. That didn't have secret acheivements. I found out right at the start Atlas was the baddy, you became a Big Daddy and you killed Ryan with a golf club. That's unfair man...

Good points but when they use secret achievements for stupid reasons. Advancing the story is great way to do it because you got the game for that reason. Sorry bioshock got ruined for you.

It's OK, but I'm sure it's not just me. It's just like at the end of The Unwound Future when (SPOILER WARNING!!!)))

it turns out future Luke is actually evil and london in the future is actually underground, and that Claire is actually in the present. If that had been said in some sort of acheivements system then maybe I wouldn't have been so engrossed by the story, and the ending certainly wouldn't have been so dramatic...

END!!!

Do you see my point? Secret acheivements are worthwhile if key plot twists need to be hidden. But not solely to annoy people

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I don't think there is a problem with achievements or trophies in concept, but I find them a little pointless in their current form ... Effectively, they're somewhat similar to challenge based unlockables that used to be fairly common in games without the in-game benefit of these unlockables.

Personally, if it was up to me I would try to extend these achievements to include in game unlockables and possibly items that could be added to your avatar/Mii; while it is not the most exciting thing, it would be interesting to be able to give your avatar a green tunic for finishing Zelda (and whatnot).
