yea I bought King Kong and actually it wasn't half bad, just sometimes annoying with them always making me save everyone else. However I think achievements that are to hard ruin a game. For instance, GTA IV. Play the whole game and also do extra for 300 achievement points, what a joke. Some help to give replay value but some are just a joke how much you have to do. Some Tiger Woods is plagued with these achievement issues. I Think games like Oblivion got it right, knowing the game is very long you can get them all within the side quests and main quests in one play through
I think this can stop sales too, If achievements are just way to hard to get. I think that playing through the game should get you atleast half the achievements of the game. If you want to make them play it on hard fine but then it comes down to how good the gameplay is. If it is hard to control then this can ruin the game as well. So if your game is just ok, then make the achievements easier. The better the game the more you can raise the bar.
Like lost planet, I won't even play it because the achievements are just to hard for the game. Not really so much hard but they are a lot of online and if your online sucks then who wants to play to get them, no one. You are right though achievements are addictive and should be chosen wisely. If not, it can ruin the game or just make you feel ripped off.
OH YEA, secret achievements are just stupid. I go online and read them right away, so what the point? To get me online, that will happen anyway.

This. Oblivion has the best acheivements on any game for me, made me want to play and finish al side-quests.
But acheivements which you get for advancing with the story are stupid, especially if more than half of them are like this.
Similarly, online-only acheivements puts people who can't go online at a disadvanage
Also-Bioshock. That didn't have secret acheivements. I found out right at the start Atlas was the baddy, you became a Big Daddy and you killed Ryan with a golf club. That's unfair man...

Good points but when they use secret achievements for stupid reasons. Advancing the story is great way to do it because you got the game for that reason. Sorry bioshock got ruined for you.

It's OK, but I'm sure it's not just me. It's just like at the end of The Unwound Future when (SPOILER WARNING!!!)))
it turns out future Luke is actually evil and london in the future is actually underground, and that Claire is actually in the present. If that had been said in some sort of acheivements system then maybe I wouldn't have been so engrossed by the story, and the ending certainly wouldn't have been so dramatic...
END!!!
Do you see my point? Secret acheivements are worthwhile if key plot twists need to be hidden. But not solely to annoy people
