Forums - Microsoft - So I Played with Kinect!

I went into a store and it had a demo stall set up. First of all im a complete Sony fanboy but I decided to try out the "competition" well lets just say i walked away very impressed and will be buying me a sexy new Xbox 360 with kinect in a few weeks.

I had a very different experience with Kinect over the holidays ...

I played Kinect at my brother's house, found it to be pretty laggy (not so bad for simple party games but would be an issue for anything else), required a ton of space (useless for someone living in an apartment or a modest house), and it kept dropping my neice and nephews out of the game even if they were playing in the optimal space (they marked it off with tape). Even though I own an XBox 360, Kinect is not something I am going to buy.

That's cool. I didn't plan on getting it for a while but the wife and kids started with the instant pestering once the commercials began to infiltrate my home. I figured X-Mas made for a good time to get it and that's what I did. I too am pretty impressed by the couple of games that I played. I notice the lag occasionally but it really hasn't had any impact on the fun factor. And the kids, forget about it, they LOVE it. Iv'e only played Adventures and Sports and I'm liking Sports more. Got my ass kicked twice in a row at table tennis online but it was the funnest ass kicking I've received in a while. Bowling and track and field a pretty good too.

I know it's far from perfect and the titles are a bit limited atm but damn it's still fun.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Okay I didn't want to create a new thread for this, so here's my chance to give my first impressions when I played it at my brother's house a few days ago. (he rented Kinect, but he's going to buy it soon).

He also rented 4 games:

- Kinect Adventures
- Kinect Sports
- Kinectimals
- Your Shape

Overall I have to say the controls (in those games at least) are pretty good. It's incredibly fun to play Adventures or Sports and make weird movements with your hands and feet just to see your avatar copying them perfectly.
The activities and mini games are great (Rally Ball (aka Ricochet), Table Tennis or Bowling) and the Unreal Engine does a fantastic job at creating a colourful world without any texture loading problems (yeah sound unbelievable but it's true)

Only played one mini game in Your Shape (which was pretty good) and I have to say the body tracking was even more impressive here. It can even read the print on your shirt and puts it perfectly readable into the game.

Also was very impressed with the instant drop-in drop-out feature of all the games.

Xbox Pause!

I love my Kinect. I only have Adventures and Kinectimals, but I plan to get Joyride and Dance Central.

My brother has it, I'll just nick it when he's not looking.

Don't get Joyride.  Or rather, think carefully about it and try it first if possible - I think there's a demo on Live.

I found it terrible because it just didn't seem to fit Kinect, it just felt weak next to every other driving title I've played.  Dance Central however is a great example of where Kinect excels.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

You must try Kinect Sports , its a ton of fun. Moreover,  Table tennis is the best approach of the game i have ever tried in a video game,  can even recognise many bevel servers and paddle technique.

There's 2 demos. 1 on Live and a different 1 on the Adventures disc, as well as demos for Dance Central and Your Shape. The Boy loves it(better than MK:Wii he said!) so I'll get it for him.
