Forums - Sony - Sucker Punch expands: new offices + plenty of space to grow

It seems Sucker Punch have been growing as of late, and they seemingly intend to keep doing so, if their move to new offices is any implication.

From the PlayStation Blog:

It’s no secret that in inFAMOUS 2 Cole has to flee Empire City and head to New Marais after his first encounter with the Beast. Well, Cole’s not the only one changing scenery. Although we didn’t have an ultimate showdown, we did move 24 floors down in the same building but tripled our square footage. Yes, we may have lost our great views, but to rid the sun glare we closed the blinds anyway. Besides, as you’ll see in this little photo tour… the new diggs are really cool.

[...]

Upon leaving this area, you’ll walk down our long, long did I say long hallway. If you look closely you’ll see the Cole halo neon sign at the far end and all our Sly Cooper art (above). Looking towards the other end of the hallway shows off more inFAMOUS art from past events and a Sly Cooper Mask neon sign (above). After trekking parts of the hallway you’ll find yourself in the software engineer’s wing (above). Offices are decorated in a variety of ways (below) and we still have plenty of room to grow.

And there are plenty of pics to be had:

I guess this explains the mystery of how Sucker Punch might be able to handle two games at once.

I know they love their independence, and have a great relationship with Sony, but I wonder if Sony will ever pick them up. They seem like they'd be a perfect addition to Sony's 1st party arsenal.

Agreed. They'd make an awesome aqcuisition on Sony's part, imo.  And they'd probably have access to even more of Sony's goods that way.

I'm sure they'd get free Sony tvs like Naughty Dog etc., instead of the random assortment of monitors they have right now.  It certainly would make expansion a somewhat cheaper affair.

WTF I thought they were owned by Sony. Dayum Sony, take out your wallet and go buy them NAOW!

I hope inFAMOUS 2 really delivers, that should guarantee Sony purchasing them :D

I think Sony is buying them after inFamous 2 is released, seeing how they are expanding their space. Or they are going multiplatform soon.

I kinda question all these developers going multiplatform.  It's hard to replace the support/hype that Sony can provide you.

Just look at Ninja Theory and Enslaved. It's barely broken 300k across two platforms three months since release.  By going multiplatform Ninja Theory had to license a new engine and expand development to a second platform, meanwhile their product was released to less sales and less fanfare than Heavenly Sword, even though it is by all accounts a better game.

Agreed and I surely hope Sucker Punch won't go that route, inFamous is by far one of my favorite game. This expansion makes me think they are going to be first party soon and I really hope so, that would probably make things easier for them and maybe produce more stuff at same time (one big game some nice DLC or even a smaller PSN game).

It's kinda sad to see the case of Ninja Theory, they weren't ready - imo - to step up and do commercial success basically by their own. Staying with Sony (or moving to MS or Nintendo) would probably be better, these publishers would surely supported better and Ninja Theory wouldn't waste time and money on another platform.

I'm actually quite shocked Sony hasn't stepped up to purchase Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Insomniac or Eat, sleep, play. It really goes to show though what kind of company Sony must be to work for considering they're not even owned (aside from the IP's) by Sony and they continue to stick to that one platform.

This is exactly why I buy pretty much every Sony exclusive on the market. It's like they deserve my money lol

don't say that! now i can't get the images out of my mind!

Enslaved with the sales and graphics it deserved exclusively on PS3!

but i can dream, can't i?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I'm pretty sure Sony owns Naughty Dog.

They already own Naughty Dog, and I can guarantee you they've approached Insomniac about the subject more than once.  However, Insomniac will do anything to remain independent.

As for Eat Sleep Play, they were formed by individuals leaving Sony, so that says enough right there.  I'm sure they wouldn't necessarily mind being bought, if they were left with no other options, but they left with the intent to create a studio with a more indy, low-key atmosphere, and I'm sure they're just fine where they are.  That being said, their goals of being the ultimate indie studio kinda got put on the backburner when their Twisted Metal project ballooned from a PSN title into a full retail release.  They're not just making Call all Cars anymore lol.

Now Sucker Punch I'm not sure about.  I'd assume Sony has approached them about acquisition in the past, but they haven't really expressed the sentiment that they wouldn't like to be purchased, nor have they done anything that would imply they would like to remain as they are. I initially assumed they like'd their small development community, much like Eat Sleep Play, but this recent expansion implies they have no fear of growth.

Maybe they simply haven't been approached by Sony yet?  The Sly games didn't exactly light up the charts, and Infamous was their first title to enjoy multi-million figure sales, so maybe Sony were content to keep their relationship as is at the time.  Who knows where they stand now, but I could totally see an acquisition in the near future.
