Forums - Gaming - 2011: Year of the Revival of the JRPG Genre On Consoles?

As you all may know, a group of potentially excellent JRPGs will be coming out in 2011.

Here is the list:

Xenoblade - from the reception from Japan and the people over here that imported the game, it's pretty much offical that Xenoblade is an excellent and very progressive JRPG that pushes the genre forward. And with this letter from Nintendo saying that Xenoblade will have a US release but that Nintendo just hasn't came up with a proper release date for it (though, things are looking grim for The Last Story):

We'll get the chance to possibly say that as well.

The Last Story - From what we saw from the trailers and the details we've read, this looks to be the JRPG that will set the standard for all JRPGs after it on how next gen JRPG gameplay should be done.

Disgaea 4 - A Disgaea game with graphics fitting for the next gen. Need I say more?

Final Fantasy Versus XIII (maybe) - It looks way to good to be bad. I know that's a weak argument....but still.

Ni no Kuni (PS3 Version) - Like Versus XIII, this game looks too good to be bad. Also, Studio Ghibli is the co-creators of the game (the people responsible for the creation of the anime movie, Spirited Away, another reaon why it's going to be bloody awesome).

It looks fantasic.

So, what do you think? 2011 = Revival of the JRPG Genre on Consoles?

Well that depends, personally I don't think Xenoblade will end up coming to NA ever and Ni No Kuni won't make it out in 2011 if ever.  FFv13 is also very doubtful for 2011 thought it's hard to say since it's a major release and probably won't have a huge delay between the JP and NA release dates.

I look forward to 2011 for a lot of RPGs, but those three probably won't make it in time, and maybe not The Last Story either though it's a big game so it has a better chance of releasing in a reasonable amount of time.  The only one that is certain is Disgaea 4 and while I agree with it being a JRPG many won't so that takes out the entire list and leaves us with smaller things like Ar Tonelico 3 and Neptune both of which I look forward to greatly.

I'm gonna hit you.

DQX is as likely to be released in 2011 as most of those titles and it's more JRPG than pretty much every non-DQ JRPG in existence, so you better put it on there, ;(!

considering that he put Xenoblade on the list I have to assume he's basing it on US releases and I'd have to disagree, there is basically no chance in hell that DQX would make it to NA in 2011.  I can't find any DQ with a time between JP and NA release less than a year so unless it gets released Japan in the next 7 days I'd say you're boned.

I agree with your statement as soon as a new Grandia, Wild Arms, Suikoden, and Tales of game gets announced for the major consoles for a worldwide release.

I'm not so sure. He said that The Last Story's chances of coming to the West are grim yet he still put that on there so I think he's going by "if it releases anywhere" basis.

Oh, and DQX could be surprisingly "outside of Japan" oriented (so it may release closer to Japanese release outside of Japan than usual); the Wii base is tiny in Japan so they might as well have announced the game as a Wii/PS3 multiplatform or on DS if they wanted to sell it there. I believe that, this time, they want to try to popularize the series outside of Japan using Wii's massive base and increased advertising assistance from Nintendo.

you are technically correct, I looked up the release dates and flipped which release was on the 27th of November and which was on the 15th of November in my head so that was slightly less than a year, but my larger point still stands.
