Nintendo has been airing adverts just for The Last Story conference in Japan. This probably means the games marketing pre-release will be pretty big. The Last Story is doing innovative things with its gameplay and includes an online mode. Its being made by Sakaguchi with him thinking in a type of way that he did when he made Final Fantasy I and VII. The Last Story could be a revolution.

If Nintendo back it in a tremendous way in Japan and Europe could we see Final Fantasy usurped as the top selling console JRPG? I hope so, for me Final Fantasy has been mediocre starting with FFX. After FFIX I felt the series became quite bad. If not with The Last Story could The Last Story 2 do it?

I think Final Fantasy has declined a lot in sales. The Last Story is sounding like a game that doesn't come very often and Nintendo is showing they want to market it. They did this to Dragon Quest IX and I think Dragon Quest IX outsold Final Fantasy XIII so it could happen with The Last Story, no?

Depends on Famitsu opinion. The magazine has a lot of influence in Japan. If The Last Story is a great game and has better quality then maybe for The Last Story 4 or 5.

DQIX outsold FFXIII in Japan yes, but DQVIII got 4.5m and DQIX increased that to 5.3m it isn't a massive step up in percentages.  There's a huge difference between pushing a huge franchise to be even bigger and pushing a new IP to match one of the highest selling JRPG series ever.

if we're going with quality here, the Persona series usurped FF a LONG time ago due to the FF team members' ineptitude at story-telling, plot, character, and design. We'll have to wait and see on TLS, but I expect good things from Sakaguchi who has his creative juices flowing again

Maybe if its sales are justified enough to evolve it into a series, then the third or fourth game, as Pavolink said, could do it.

However, before Sakaguchi thinks of sequels, I want him to give the Playstation market a chance.

I see but is it impossible? If Nintendo gives The Last Story Final Fantasy level marketing it can be possible, it will have quality so what can stop it? The online could mean Japan might get its first multiplayer JRPG. I think there's potential, maybe The Last Story 2 or 3 will see it Usurp Final Fantasy.
