Forums - General - Is there room for actors in the future?

Galaki said:

No, actors will just not be way overpaid since they have compitition coming.

You're talking about "stars" not actors.  Most of the best actors around don't earn a fraction of movie stars.  And movie stars are paid becuase of how they look, their public persona or some particular draw they represent to the high volume movie going public.  And nothing digital is going to compete with that - well, maybe apart from Japan, they can go nuts over virtual performers there.

OP - I wouldn't sweat it.  Actors are certainly required, particularly for anything outside dumb action movies - and even there they sure make a difference.

Nothing is comparable currently to a superb, layered performance.  Nothing digital is even close to matching, as an example, Colin Firth's excellent performance in The King's Speach.

As for Lucus, I would imagine the tech is miles away from what he's thinking at this point.  Look at Clu in Tron Legacy, which is probably the pinacle of what's been tried so far, and remember they needed the living Jeff Bridges for reference before de-aging him.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

It should be noted that a lot of recent movies that were relying on star power have recently been flopping big time (How Do You Know, every mpvoe starrig Angelina Jolie etc.). I really don't think that nowadays it's thet important who's starring in a movie. If you look at the most successful movies of the past years, I don't think you'll be able to say that their success was due to the actors.

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

(The Voice of a Generation and Seece)

"If you cant stand the sound of your own voice than dont become a singer !!!!!"

Actors still have to do the body imaging, tracking, voice acting and more in digital work. They should actually be paid more for Digital alternative works than normal acting without overt visual effects.

Nolan North is set to play every role in every movie.

If you just like an endless procession of explosions and gun fire, sure go for digital actors.

Movies like moon, there will be blood, inglorious bastards with digital actors, no thanks.

Using the same actors over and over again gets old though. Inception was a great movie (although a bit heavy on the shooting as usual) It would have been even better if I wasn't aware the whole time that it was leonardo dicaprio instead of cobb.

It's actually illegal to use an actor's likeness without their consent. A precedent established when Crispin Glover refused to work in Back to the Future 2, and they said "screw you" and hired a lookalike to play the future George McFly. He sued, and won, and no-one's been able to do that again

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

When he dies... may god have mercy on us.

Um. Even in an age where the big studios can make films that are completely realistic there will still be plenty of independant filmmakers that wont have the capacity to create films like that. Live action will never completely die. Nor should it. Just like the theatre and musicals still exist. What will happen is te slice of the pie that actors currently have will be reduced, but that doesn't mean that the acting as an artform will go the way of the dodo. I mean actors themselves could get together and makes films on their own and aslong as its good then people will pay to see it.

Besides the 3d version of the father in tron was rubbish.

IMO. People should be paying me for looking like me.
