Forums - General - Your brand of scotch whisky?

So for you scotch/whisky drinkers out there, what's your brand?

For my everyday scotch, I generally like Johnny Walker Black with a few cubes of ice.  When I want to be fancy, I generally have a bottle of The Macallan 12 handy and drink that neat.

For my birthday this year I actually bought myself a bottle of Macallan 18.

Blended: Chivas or Dewars

Single malt: Glenlivet or Glenfiddich  (old enough to date     )

I like 'em rocky.

Blended I generally go for Famous Grouse. As a student I'm too poor to afford much single malt, so the very occasional Glenfiddich is all I have - or whatever my Dad has (which is quite a few really).

Jameson

Oh! A topic dear to my heart!

Alrighty, I am a single malt Scotch drinker. I have had my times with Johnny Walker and the American blendeds, but that time came to an abrupt end when my older brother broke out a 12 year Macallan. I haven't gone back.

I have only tried a few single malt scotch whiskey's: 12 yr Glenlivet, 12 year Macallan, 12 year Highland Park, and 12 yr Glenfiddich.

I have to say my favorite thus far is the 12 yr Glenlivet. Smooth going in and smooth going down with ample taste and a very light touch of peat in the after taste.

The one I dislike the most is the 12 yr Glenfiddich. The back of the bottle says "hints of pear," which I can definitely taste, but it goes down like a tequila shot. Much too harsh for my palate.

The 12 yr Highland Park rates a 96-100 from the Wine Enthusiast, but it is not my fave because the after taste is heavy peat almost like drinking liquid smoke, but not quite.

Here is a good site to check out the ratings on spirits: http://www.proof66.com/

That is a lot of dough for a bottle of Scotch. In Cali, we have BevMo! the Wal-Mart of liquor stores and BevMo! sells 18 yr Macallan for around $150 online.

Is the older Scotch better than the younger?

I like Isle of Jura while my wife prefers Oban.

Jameson is an Irish rather than a Scotch, though perhaps you knew this.

That's about what it is here, though I found it on sell so I got it for about $130 which is still a lot but it was for my birthday.

And yes, the older the scotch, the better it is.  I've had the 12, 15, 18, and 25 year Macallan and they're all amazing and only get better with age.  The barrel they're matured in also has a lot to do with how they taste.  I'm a giant Macallan whore so that's generally what I stick to but I only like the ones aged in the sherry oak barrels, not the fine oak.

Personally I prefer bourbon to to scotch, so much sweeter even if it has more of an oakey flavor.

But I like scotch because it has more bite Johnny Walker Red is my choice at the moment, but hey you got to mix it up, so I give all booze a try from tequila to vodka.

In all though whiskey is numero uno!

Ugh, I tried Red Label once straight and it just tasted like burned rubber to me.  Even mixed I can still taste that burnt rubber taste and can't stand it.  I really like Black Label, the next one up, and I've had a taste of Blue Label (most amazing thing ever) but I just can't stand Red.
