I haven't been paying attention to the format war for a while since ratios are meaningless until they can pass 5 to 10% of the market so I have to know are they at least over 1% of the market yet?

Personally, the numbers I tend to find more interesting are movies that are released in both formats ... When you have a big exclusive release it makes you wonder how it would sell on the other format.

(This) Next week we will see how well Harry Potter performed on each of the formats which will be interesting.

It depends on the demographic. For example, 300 has sold about 1.9:1 BD:HD, where as Planet Earth has sold about .9:1 BD:HD (though lately sales have picked back up). The Departed and the much more recent Ocean's 13 have both sold about 1.65:1 BD:HD.

I think HP will sell a little bit better than 1.6:1 in favor of Blu-Ray, as that is the general trend, but also because gamers (thus ps3 owners) are more likely to embrace such a work of fantasy, and the fact that people our age (well, my age at least) grew up with Harry, and often have a sentimental attachment to the series, and will be more likely to purchase OotP and rebuy the rest of the set. Of course, that's all my opinion.

I just hope that Warner switches to BluRay so this damn format war is over. (Yes I have a PS3, but if HD-DVD would be outselling BD 3-1 I would want BluRay to die)

And Pirates sold 180,000 on Blu-ray in it's opening week.

That might help give perpective to the ratios.

@albonius

Yes, High Def sales account for 5% of movie sales in the US.

 What about the DVD sales of those movies?

Generation 8 Predictions so far.....(as of 9/2013)

Console that will sell most: Nintendo Wii U

Who will sell more consoles between Microsoft/SONY: SONY

" What about the DVD sales of those movies?"

Much much much more? But if the "HD discs are 5% of sold discs" number is true they start to become relevant. After all they cost 3 times as much as a DVD.

@ makingmusic

My bad. But HD films are becoming more and more revelant.
