Forums - Sony - Give some DC online universe beta impressions.

I'm just wondering if the DC game is worth it,I like the idea of the game, but still not sure if I'm going to get it,when it eventually comes out. So for those people that are in the beta,I'd like to know what you guys think of it. Thanks in advance. lol

I hate button mashy games but this one is awesome.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

thanks for the reply, could you give some more details if you don't mind. I just want to know the overall feel of the game, thank you.

There's some good impressions here: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=121348&page=1#20

i actually i like it. I just created my charachter and finished the 1st mission. It is mostly a button masher but I like how there are many ways to kill an enemy.

Right...I'm not really into these kind of games nor have I really given it a fair roll of the dice but from what I've played, eventhough it's a Beta, it's still a good game. (Not I'm only playing as a good guy, so obviously, being a villian might be different).

After the long ass 15gig install (took me about 2days to D/l all of it) I am asked to create my character, at first the custom creation of your character looks quite limited because you are only allowed to use certain templats, e.g Good/Bad (personally, I would have liked the option to be Neutral)  Male/Female, and then as your abilities Gadgets/magic and I forget the 3rd one (but it's obviously tailored towards people who want to emulate either Batman/Superman or Wonderwoman. Fighting style, (weapons/hand-to-hand/magic)
And finally, your movements, Flying/super speed/improved agility. (I went super speed but we'll get there eventually)

Then asked to choose your costume. This is the part where individuality sets in, there's quite an array of customisations but obviously loosely based on already existing DC heroes. then a name then a mentor (Batman/Superman/Wonderwoman) depending on who you choose will affect which city you will be mostly based in.

When you start, you find yourself trapped in one of Brainiac's ships and you have to escape (aka the tutorials). For me, I felt it was going to be button mashy game as the first 2 fights, I was doing nothing but mashing Square for short ranged attacks and Triangle for mid-ranged attacks, L2 plus a face button for hot keys and R2 plus Face= items. (Like I said, I'm early in but I assume I'll later get better options to improve my combat).

My skills and abilities were based loosely on the templates I chose at the beginning so I have a character who fights with his hands, can do fire magic and is super fast.

After the tutorial, you get into the main game and the first thing you notice is how HUGE the whole thing is, it's easy to get lost in places, even the starting point (The Watchtower [which acts as your main overworld which acts as a bridge connecting all the main points of the game]) is overwhelmingly epic.

Once you get past how big everything is and get going, I think this is where the game excels. One of the best parts of playing super hero games is that split second when you feel as if you're the one with the abilities. As I said before, my character has Super Speed (can be toggled on/off by pressing L3), although when he's running on the ground, he feels very slow and sluggish, you don't get the feeling he's going really fast (maybe because he's low-leveled I dunno) But the moment you find a tall building and then run up it only to do a leap of faith of it is the moment you really feel like something special.

Every once in a while whilst running around, you'll see a crime happening (e.g a mugging on streets, breaking and entering if on roof tops[though the rooftop muggings is currently broken as you can't intervene]) and you can choose to stop them or carrying on doing what you're doing.

For the record, there is a plot obviously and story missions. Though the Brainiac thing at the beginning was clearly a tutorial, there was a story involving Oracle trying to get you to find a way for Superman to enter the ship. Because I'm with Batman, my story involves Batman based villians.

This is what I don't like about the game. I'm kind of a selfish player especially when there's story involved. If there's a story, I like to feel it's all about me and me only, (Yes, I'm aware it's an MMO and blah blah blah) When you are dispatched on a mission, you are made to feel important as if your involvement is imperative and vital...but the moment you arrive at the destination and see about 15 other people doing the exact same thing you are...it kinda loses its shine a little :D. Especially when you guys aren't part of a group (Though I noticed I was getting credited with points if I helped someone else out, e.g if a mission asked you to defeat 20 thugs and you have 15 but you see one guy getting beat up and you go to help him even up the score a bit but don't strike the finishing blow, you still get creditted for it, not sure if I'm kill stealing but that's what I noticed.)

Another annoying part is if a mission requires you to pick up X amount of items, and there are more people than items, it gets annoying waiting to find specified items.

I would be able to get used to others raining on my parade if it wasn't so irregular, I say this because in the same story mission, after running around with 15 other super heroes, trying to fight thugs and find set items, I was asked to go to a new area where randomly, I was the only player there but there was an overwhelming amount of enemy units, it took several deaths and an exhaustion of all my items before I could complete it (Though I did fluke an in-game achievement known as "feats" for my troubles because of it so I guess it evened out in the end.)

And after I finished that mission, I was treated to a nice animated cutscene depicting the jailing of the defeated villian, which was actually a very nice touch I thought.

Other minor nitpick, though I suspect because it's a beta.

Voice acting for NPCs (not the main cast) is woeful, sometimes just out right weird e.g a man's "stock voice" playing when I spoke to a female character.

It's near impossible to set waypoints, especially when trying to set one outside your immediate area. (E.G, when I started, I went to Metropolis by accident instead of Gotham and could not figure out how to get out of Metropolis to get back, I kept running into lvl 16 enemies and getting killed over and over again, I had to go to Gamefaqs to ask for directions.)

Not everything is clearly explained, e.g I don't know what the red bar under my name means, all I know is it fills up every time I hit someone. But nothing happens when it's full.

Uhh...yeah...

Thanks for the reply, seems promising enough.

Loving it. So far, so good. Except I wish there were more character creation options.
