I think you misjudged that BY 100%. We can compare whatever we want.
Just because you don't like the success and thats the only reason a hater remark would be made.

You really want somebody to answer these questions with something like "Well the problem with Nintendo fans is that..." ?
Yes Kinect is a huge success. Nobody's denying that. But it's standing on Nintendo's shoulders. MS waited for Nintendo to carve out this market, and then they dumped in somebody else's tech (after both Nintendo and Sony turned it down) and a ton of marketing money. It wasn't even risky. It made perfect sense. So as a Nintendo fan, it's like "hurray for competition!" but at the same time, "come on guys, can we put some effort into the software? It's 2010. You're not competing with Rayman Raving Rabbids, Super Monkey Ball, and Excite Truck anymore. You're competing with Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort."
Why do you think Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort aren't comparable to Kinect? They both use system-exclusive peripherals launched years after their initial console launch, neither of them launched anywhere near Black Friday and Christmas, and are the 11th and 12th best-selling games of all time. Both peripherals have had other games launched later on. The only difference is that Nintendo advertised the software instead of the hardware, instead of calling them "new platform launches."

This not a matter of debate or semantics, it's fact. You may not like it and feel Kinect deserves special recognition but it doesn't given the classification of the type of hardware product that Kinect is. |
So bust out the site rules that say you have to compare only certain material to others. YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT, if he wants to he can and will . So read the info and don't complain like every other poster on this thread. We don't need comments from peanut gallery. How about 5 comments about one thing not 500.
What have you contributed?

I agree I just wanted to bring some sanity to the ridiculous reactions to Kinect sales from certain section of this forum. A thread was locked earlier that actually tried to say kinect was a failure... this is more a reaction to that, But at least I posted some data. |
Well it is better to bring sanity through logic. Playing their game never really works well. But the data does help and I tried to extend on that. Just got to ignore the haters. Only people with an agenda right now are considering Kinect a failure.
Ok, here is something to ponder. People have said stuff like Move and Kinect wouldn't be as big of a deal, because ACCESSORIES salewsie usually don't hold up compared to the sale of a console, if it is an addon that comes later. This means accessory sales are weaker. Well, I would then take it, if Kinect is outdoing console launches, that is something one that needs to make note of. Has any accessory that didn't launch with a console do sales numbers comparible to what Kinect is doing now? I would say that maybe Move comes close. But, what else comes close?
I also would count Kinect as something between a new console and an accessory in nature, because what it does is fundamentally different that what the 360 was doing prior.
I didn't know Kinect was a platform! . Good i can save money instead of buying the bundle :D
IMO numbers are irrelevent. Console compared to add on.
Anyway on the genral topic, yes Kinect launch was a success. However i see the break even point by the end of the year..Which is good! In less than 2 months they will see economic profit!

So to prove a point I believe Kowenicki put this thread together and it proves the point. Kinect software and hardware sales are doing very well. |
I must be missing something. I fail to see how ANYONE can possibly view those Kinect games sales as good. Take out Kinect Adventures (which you need buy in order to purchase a Kinect), you have a whopping TWO titles that have passed the million mark. Most titles will struggle to even reach the 500k mark. The Udraw games have sold more than most of those Kinect games. You have 3 Kinect games in the top 50 this week. 0 in the top ten of NPd. And this is all during the strength of the holiday season, when everything is lifted.
So what this means is that people are buying the hardware, but its games are not selling. Sooner of later, something will have to give, and the Kinect hardware sales will be lowered to be more in line with the software sales, because like consoles, the main reason for Kinect's existance is the software. Unless killer aps start coming out next year, Kinect sales will fall. I don't mean this to sound harsh or anything, I'm just stating the reality of the situation, which Kinect supporters don't seem to want to see.
kinect is the fastest selling new electronic device in history.

But I guess you could compare it to systems as well, but it's not a fair comparison for the add-on (add-on is limited to user base while a system isn't). If we look at Wii Fit after 6 weeks we get 3.6 million in sales so Kinect is outpacing it right now. Should continue to do that for awhile as Kinect launched in the holiday season and Wii Fit didn't do that aside from Japan. Software wise for those balance boards, it is hard to tell as Wii Fit series is the only that requires the balance board, but there is a lot of software that uses it. We know about Move and Kinect is far outpacing it in hardware and software, although same issue with software for Move as with the balance board. As for Guitar Hero and Rock Band like things, this is another hard one to really look at. Across many platforms, peripherals aren't required to play the games, and different games in the series when you "had" to buy the peripherals. I mean aside from trying to get a fair comparison, it is impressive what Kinect is doing right now. Obviously supply has been something it has had over some of those compared to as Wii, PS3, Wii Fit, and the Guitar Hero/Rock Band series all suffered some pretty brutal supply constraints early. But maybe this just shows better preparedness on MS's part. As for software wise, Kinect still has a long way to go. Seems like many people are sticking with Kinect Adventures that they got with the peripheral and either choosing Kinect Sports or Dance Central as a secondary purchase. But have yet to see really any expansion past that as possibly waiting til next year to make more purchases for it. This is unlike the Wii where although they got the Wii Sports with it as well, they were also getting Wii Play, albeit for a second control in Europe and Japan, and obviously Twilight Princess. 6 million in software in the first 6 weeks (excluding Wii Sports in Europe and America) which is pretty damn good for launch. This compared to about 3.8-4.0 million in software for Kinect (excluding Kinect Adventures). Pretty much this shows what many have stated that some people are content at just getting the peripheral and the game that comes with which might state the software isn't the greatest yet. And if they are buying a game with it, it is just one. Compared to the Wii which had early adopters buying at least 2 games when they bought it. So what I can say is yes Kinect is quite the success so far. It has entered the market in a huge way and pushed 4 million in its first 6 weeks. With a few weeks left in the main holiday season, that number will continue to skyrocket and pass other peripherals like it such as the balance board and even system launches themselves. But, if the product wants to continue to be a success in the future, software does need to increase and more big software like Kinect Sports, Dance Central, and Kinectimals need to release. MS and third parties will have to continue to release big titles to keep it going strong. But what has been proven is it is a big force in the industry now and here to stay. |
If I knew you IRL I'd shake your hand in an instant.
Really though, great post as always.

Try playing a Kinect without an Xbox 360 and get back to me. It doesn't matter what it's "seen as." The fact is that it's an add no matter how you try to spin it, and thus shouldn't be compared to the Wii. Comparing Kinect to the balance board would be a more accurate comparison. |
I wish I was as narrow minded as you, things would be much more simple. Kinect is seen as a "platform" not necessarily a console, but not as limited as an "add-on" would suggest. The fact that you find the kinect comparable to the balance board is indicative of the logic used to produce such a post. However, it is obvious that people's idea of an add-on and platform differ which is why there seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding the status of the kinect. I have never seen an "add-on" house the variety of software that is out now and is yet to come due to the versatility it offers developers when they are designing said software. When you have a device that is going to be supported by a continuous stream of software developed SPECIFICALLY for that device covering a broad range of genres with planned hardware updates Im not quite sure how kinect could be seen as anything other than a platform. Hell, even littlebigplanet 2 will be considered its own platform even though it may be a piece of software it still provides the tools and functions necessary to allow those who use littlebigplanet 2 to create a broad range of experiences.
