Forums - Sales - Kinect launch success????? Some figures.

Reasonable said:

It's had a great launch, no doubt about it, but I have one nitpick with your approach.

Kinect launched both as a bundle - which I will accept as a new platform purchase - and standalone selling to existing customers - which I struggle with as those have to been seen as peripheral sales.

The last figure from  ioi quoted 40% bundles and 60% standalone so for me the correct way to view it is (taking a rounded 4 million figure):

sales as a platform (360/Kinect bundle) - 1,600,000 million

sales as a peripheral (Kinect only) - 2,400,000 million

I just don't think you can fairly count sales that only happened because there was an existing install base against Wii or any other console at launch with zero install base.

And this guy here took the cake long ago from the OP and owned the thread. Didn't anybody notice?

This is such  misleading thread.

The Kinect is a addon for the 360. I need my 360 to be able to play this. Otherwise it is useless on its own.

It has a userbase of 48million already. So the sales of an ADDON that gives value to the current user are expected to be this high.

Dont want to speak for Kowenicki, but I believe this thread came about because in the Amercas and Weekly thead people start saying Kinect software sales arent good.  So to prove a point I believe Kowenicki put this thread together and it proves the point. Kinect software and hardware sales are doing very well.

I must be missing something. I fail to see how ANYONE can possibly view those Kinect games sales as good. Take out Kinect Adventures (which you need buy in order to purchase a Kinect), you have a whopping TWO titles that have passed the million mark. Most titles will struggle to even reach the 500k mark. The Udraw games have sold more than most of those Kinect games. You have 3 Kinect games in the top 50 this week. 0 in the top ten of NPd. And this is all during the strength of the holiday season, when everything is lifted.

So what this means is that people are buying the hardware, but its games are selling. Sooner of later, something will have to give, and the Kinect hardware sales will be lowered to be more in line with the software sales, because like consoles, the main reason for Kinect's existance is the software. Unless killer aps start coming out next year, Kinect sales will fall. I don't mean this to sound harsh or anything, I'm just stating the reality of the situation, which Kinect supporters don't seem to want to see.

The install base if 4 million so if you expect COD numbers you're just being daft, the games have a great attach ratio to hardware and are showing legs.

Next you fail to realize that MS is making money on each Kinect sold. This is why they made the Kinect hackable to the pc market. Every Kinect sold, regardless of whether it is being used with a 360 or PC is making them money.

You have been called out before on your irrational hatred and trolling of Kinect, I don't see why a grown man is so threatened by an electronic device. Whatever if it makes you feel better to downplay Kinect then go ahead.

Who says I'm threatened by it? I just don't like the looks of those games, and I'm harmlessly expressing my humble opinion of it. And I also don't want to play games without a controller. Just because I hate Kinect (well mainly its games) doesn't mean I'm threatened by it.

God people are stupid. Kinect is the same thing as Move, which is equal to the Wiimote. It has what it is in its name. I mote, meaning a remote control. So why are people comparing console sales to a controller? Yes, all it's is a alternative controller. Stop day dreaming kiddo.

Thx.  BTW I do think this is they key point.  Comparing Kinect launch to a new console launch isn't apples to apples unless you make some adjustments, such as only counting bundle sales - which tell a somewhat different story, that Kinect/360 together had a great launch but not ahead of say the Wii launch.

Thinking about it further I've decided that at this stage Kinect isn't a platform/console either no matter how much MS want to claim it is.  It simply doesn't fufil enough criteria or, conversely, if it is then Move must be as well, which also doesn't make sense.

It's a new periperhal and it's super popular and it certainly extends the 360 platform (i.e. a 360 with a gamepad/Kinect is a broader platform than 360/gamepad only) - but this is the same way Move (or something like Play TV) extends the PS3 - but because it cannot function without a 360 it can't be considered a platform in it's own right.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I think it's best if we compare it to PS3 move & Nintendo WII fit

Wii Fit has absolutely NOTHING in common with Kinect.

Actually, they are both platform extending peripherals.  Their method of input being different aside, they are the same thing categorically.

Seems the only people in denial here are those that think Kinect is something more than a peripheral to an established console platform.

Wii Fit is a GAME.  Kinect is a CONSOLE EXTENSION.

Wii Fit (Balance Board) is more like Guitar Hero (Guitar) or Tony Hawk Ride (Skateboard).  Kinect is more like Sega CD or 32X.

No.  They are not the same thing.  The more people promote this, the more the mods are going to take notice and it'll hopefully get added to 'the list'.

Wii Fit is not the only title supported by the Wii Balance Board so your agurment is invalid.  I already stated there are over 40 titles with Wii Balance Board support.

The mods will not take notice to something that infactual.  It will not be added to the list of actual consoles.

Do you see the Guitar Hero guitars, Tony Hawk Skateboard, Move, Wii Balance Board, 32X or Sega CD on this list anywhere?   Then don't get your hopes up for Kinect appearing anytime soon.

You're comparing a camera which is a peripheral, to a console that was suply constrained.

If the Wii had more units at launch it would sold way more, given that the console suffered from shortages in its first 2 years, let alone on launching xmas.

Even so, no one can downplay kinect sales, because it is selling good (better than move, or almost close to it?). But is selling good on xmas season, and to have stuff selling good on xmas isn't that hard.

We have to wait for Spring next year to see what kinect is really capable of and see if threads about kinect sales will be much more less or not.

Week 1?  This thread is just 7 hours old.  And that's irrelavent to my post anyway.  We're talking current tense of the verb denial.   Many Kinect apologists are claiming that right now, currently, people are saying Kinect sales are bad and are in denial.

Don't get mad...lol...it might hurt, but it will get better!

Why exactly do you think I'm mad?

This is what I'm saying.  Kinect apologists are reaching for anything they can to make things look good even when no one is saying it's bad.  It's like you want to debate for debates sake.

But people did try to make it seems like Kinect's launch was bad...anyway, this circle of deathe is getting boring.  Kinect's launch is amazing, and a majority of people on this site didn't think it would be...There is no debate there.
