And now I know why Secret of Mana is 8.99 dollar in the appstore... I hoped for 4.99... but I'll still buy it.. I'm a fool for supporting SE with their ports... >_>

Your profile says you've got a Wii so I would get it on the Virtual Console instead, according to XE it works out slightly cheaper.  Plus you can play it with a traditional controller, which you might prefer.

I already got it on VC.. I just can't resist having this great game on the go... it looks so sexy..  >_>

Damn you SE!! *shakes fist* but I'm actually surprised that the Secret of Mana hasn't been ported to a GBA, DS or PSP before....

I still think Square-Enix missed a massive opportunity by not porting and translating Seiken Densetsu 3 to the DS and adding in online play with friends.

Given the sales of SoM in both the US and Europe, I'm surprised the game didn't make it over here in the SNES days

Seiken Densetsu 3 is almost legendary in JRPG circles, a DS remake (or even enhanced port, a la Front Mission / Chrono Trigger) definitely would've been a big seller imo.  SE's handling of the Mana franchise in general has been especially terrible, though these days the Crystal Chronicles games have effectively replaced them imo.

The reason we never got it originally was because Square axed their western publishing branch in the mid 1990s (after Secret of Evermore bombed) and Nintendo wasn't really interested (they were too busy talking to Enix about Terranigma, but ended up only releasing it Europe).

It's finally catching up to the quality of their product, which has fallen by something like 9000%.

Actually their quality has fallen by at least 9001% percent, AT LEAST!

I'd go as far as 18000%.

I bought Nier for £6 a few days ago and played it for about 4 hours. Straight away after I played Final Fantasy X on the PCSX2 PS2 emulator at 1080p native. (I use my OWN PS2 bios from my very own Ps2 PAL console and my own physical copy of Final Fantasy X so it's perfectly legal), just to clear that up.

I have to say FFX looks better and it came out almost 10 years ago. Everything is superior, art style and the imagination that went into the art style, voice acting, gameplay, controls, features etc etc.

Obviously things like texture resolution are higher in Nier, you can't magically make Ps2 textures higher resolution with emulation.

Here's an example. Really need to visit the full resolution link to see. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/1569/ffxr.png

Full resolution: http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/1451/ffx2e.png

Here's what it looks like playing at the native PS2 resolution straight to a 1080p screen. Looks even worse in motion with crazy flickering. http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/8207/failfd.png

Been saying it for 3 years now; SE had made the worst decisions of any publisher this gen through alienating their core audience. Yes 360 looked attractive due to the smaller install base of PS3 but they couldn't give preferencial treatment to the 360. SE has had a history of going with the frontrunner (PS1, PS2 after leaving Nintendo), but come on! Timed release of Star Ocean 4; terrible idea, the whole FF13 ordeal; could have been handled better, making Kane & Lynch 2; uncessary. Now FF14. Oh well they will learn once they hit the red!

They should really resort to pulling out some games of their biggest Ip's. FFVII spin off, Kingdom Hearts 3 and pehaps Final Fantasy XIII-2. They also need to release Versus XIII already ffs. A multiplatform release would generate some more income and Microsoft would most likely be more than willing to pay for the advertisements. The Ps3 version of Versus XIII needs no adds. My two versus videos on youtube both have way over a million views each.

I can't begin to guess how much these big HD releases with 5-7 years development time cost in development costs.

I generally agree with all that... in the next 2-3 years or so I'd like to see Square Enix release on consoles...

Final Fantasy XIII-2 (360/PS3) From Kitase's team, maybe building on the canceled DLC scenarios and unused world assets left over from the original game.  Should be able to squeeze something like this out comparatively quick.  Easy 4m plus seller.

Final Fantasy versus XIII (360/PS3) Kick Nomura's ass to get this out asap (like holiday 2011 at the latest), bring it to 360 to increase the base and nab some MS incentives but give PS3 a year long JP exclusive to keep the Sony faithful (and Sony themselves) happy.  That's worked well for FFXIII, and it'd work well again.

Final Fantasy XIV: Online (360/PS3) Fix this clusterfuck and get it out on consoles asap.  It's PC moment is probably already passed, but it's not too late to right the ship.  Also, do whatever it takes to get the thing on 360... if Capcom can manage it, there's no good reason SE can't.

Final Fantasy VII (360/PS3/Wii2?) HD remake, big budget, huge spectacle.  If handled right this could actually match the original in sales imo (10m).  Might be the project that everyone from ex-PDD1 gets in on after FFXIII-2/Versus/various PSP projects wrap, if only to get the thing finished and on shelves in a decent timeframe.

Final Fantasy Tactics II (XBLA/PSN/iOS) After Tactics Ogre PSP wraps, this should really be the next project for team Matsun...eh... Minagawa.  Keeping it a downloadable would allow them to keep costs down and go for a consistent style with the original (isometric, sprites, etc), and the style of play seems well suited to the DD services imo.

Kingdom Hearts I & II (Wii/PS3) Remote Plus/Move fully compatible keyblade swinging, quick ports that lay the groundwork for KH3.  Could be sold standalone in Japan, but should probably be bundled for the west.  Would probably be decent sellers (especially on Wii in America) and wouldn't be a ton of work either (they already look better than 90% of Wii games, could simply be unscaled for PS3 and still look decent).

Kingdom Hearts III (PS3/Wii2?) Big budget HD sequel.  Timing depends of when Versus can wrap (hopefully soon) and if Noruma's core team got dragged into FFVII HD.  Disney and Nintendo go together pretty well too market wise (358/2 days, Epic Mickey), so make this series multiplatform from here on out.

Dragon Quest X (Wii) Where the fuck is this?  C'mon Horii/Level-5, SE's bottom line basically needs this like nothing else... get it out by the end of 2011 in Japan (with a "slime blue" Wii hardware bundle <3 <3), and get another sweetheart Nintendo publishing deal for everywhere else in 2012.

Dragon Quest VII (Wii) Quick "filler" remake from Arte Piazza and whatever code house du jour (h.a.n.d. would be a good choice given their nice looking Chocobo Dungeon Wii engine).  Easy million seller in Japan, might even come close to 2m there, and given Nintendo's interest it'd probably come overseas.

Super Mario & Dragon Quest in Itadaki Street Wii (Wii) So obvious it hurts.  This thing would kill in the current family friendly JP Wii marketplace, probably outselling every previous version of IS.

just a quick questions- has there ever been any dragon quest games for the psp or is that ip nintendo only?

NIER had much better voice acting than FFX and more competent writing, FFX's love story makes George Lucas' love stories look good. Nier most probably didn't even have 1/10th of the budget FFX got for itself, your doing unfair comparisons. Anyway Final Fantasy X was pretty mediocre in my opinion, Final Fantasy IX was the last great FF game.

Very good post, it makes alot more sense then what they are currently doing. They need to stop with these shovelware HD rpgs for a start. Last Remnant and Nier would be better of not exisiting, some gamers find something in them but for the majority it just damages Square's quality image further.

I would bet that the fans would be much happier too having thegames finally in their console. The only people I see being hurt (emotionally) are the Sony/Square Loyalists seeing some of their favorite franchises also on Microsoft and Nintendo platforms. Really it's better financially for Square-Enix, they'll bitch and moan, send death threats and contemplate suicide (Seen it on Gamefaqs) but they'll still pick up the game on release date for the Ps3.

I'd rather see Square-Enix prosper and make lots of profit so they stick around and produce high quality big budget rpgs instead of watching them go extinct.

Excellent post. All those games put together should get them back on track, only if they can make them all in the next 2-3 years. If each game takes 5 years each nothing will help.

Funny enough I found IX to be the weakest out of the VII-X bunch and NIER'S voice acting is close to non existant with what I've experienced so far. You only really hear dialogue when talking with the book and your daughter. All other Npc interactions have been text except for the chick in the libary which is a mixture of the two.

Can't say I dislike the game. I'm finding the story interesting even though the gameplay, graphics and execution is extremely medicore. That's all mainstream reviewers of today look at now I guess.

Square Enix is having a huge sale on Steam: 88% Off Square Complete Pack, only $75 for 50 games! You save $275!

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/6931/

I'm sure the sale will help SE balance the books.

If I remember correctly, there was some kind of DQ - FF crossover released on the PSP.  Apart from that I don't think there are any on the PSP.  The series is certainly not Nintendo only though, DQ VII and VIII launched on the PSX and PS2 respectively, and the ports/remakes/spin offs that accompanied them.
