HD twins strike again.

He is banned anyway good.

Square Enix's fiscal year started 1 April 2010 and ends 31 March 2011? Only 3 HD games have come out since, Neir Kane/Lynch and Front mission and one xbl/psn game.  Even though the three games didnt do that well, the main source of revenue is FF11/14.  FF14 cost a ton to make and did abysmal.   This guy is a constant troll who thinks he knows everything, glad to see some action taken

Actually, there's been quite a few more...

  • Supreme Commander 2 (360) WW
  • Just Cause 2 (360/PS3) AU/JP
  • Nier (360/PS3) WW
  • Blur (360/PS3) JP
  • Kayne & Lynch 2: Dog Days (360/PS3) WW
  • Front Mission Evolved (360/PS3) WW
  • Singularity (360/PS3) JP
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops (360/PS3) JP
...and there's also several big titles that , while not releasing within the period, did release just weeks prior and undoubtedly had effects on this year's bottom line in terms of sustained catalogue sales (or lack thereof). There's also the issue of major titles getting delayed (and thus losing previously expected revenue).  Examples of both of these include...
  • Just Cause (360/PS3) NA/EU
  • Final Fantasy XIII (360/PS3) NA/EU/AU
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Online (PS3) WW
...and finally, given it's the fiscal year forecast... we can also include titles still expected for release...
  • Final Fantasy XIII International (360) JP
  • James Bond 007: BloodStone (360/PS3) JP
  • Mindjack (360/PS3) WW
  • Gun Loco (360) WW
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360/P3) WW * now likely delayed
...really, I don't think it's unfair to say that this fiscal year SE was putting a concerted amount of resources into HD games and specifically titles focused on the west, especially compared to past years, and in most cases it's basically blown up their faces.  Their Wii support has been anemic as usual (just downloadables and a DQ spinoff) and their handheld support noticeably atrophied compared to previous years (though 3DS/PSP2 will likely be reversing that trend soon).

Finally something bad happens to devs that put out mediocre games that still sells way too much

Other then Deus and FF, what does SE have releasing next year ?

Batman: AC, Tomb Raider, Kingdom Hearts 3DS (Maybe?), Mindjack (gonna bomb), Dungeon Siege III...

Not alot at the moment but I'm sure they must have a few console RPG's or whatever up their sleeves from the Japanese side of the company... as well.. FFvsXIII and DQX is the only ones currently announced and neither seem to be next year. Supposedly a conference in Jan will announced / update us on a few games.

I think most of the Japanese publishers, SE especially, face a tricky few years with the transition from DS to 3DS. My guess is that means it's going to be trickier for them to rack up the insta-million sellers they can churn out by sticking Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest on the front.

EDIT: Turns out Mindjack is this year, January 2011, oh well at least thats another bomb out the way.

Batman: Arkham City is Warner Bros. now, SE lost the license and WB bought majority control over Rocksteady...

For next fiscal year (and later) announced retail releases...

  • Codename: Chocobo Racing (3DS) h.a.n.d.
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360/PS3/PC) Eidos Montreal
  • Dragon Quest X (Wii) Armor Project / tba (Level-5?)
  • Dragon Quest series (3DS) tba
  • Dungeon Siege III (360/PS3/PC) Obsidian Entertainment
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Online (PS3) Square Enix
  • Final Fantasy Agito XIII (PSP) Square Enix
  • Final Fantasy series (3DS) tba
  • Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3) Square Enix
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D (3DS) Square Enix Osaka
  • Hitman 5 (360/PS3/PC) IO Interactive
  • Tobidazu! Puzzle Bobble 3D (3DS) Taito
  • Tomb Raider (360/PS3/PC) Crystal Dynamics
...there's also known stuff that will probably get western releases next year (DQVI DS, DQMJ2 DS, DQMBRV Wii, FFIV Collection PSP, Dissidia 2 PSP, etc), plus western titles SE will release in Japan (Activision's various HD games and, according to rumors, Epic Mickey Wii)...

It's finally catching up to the quality of their product, which has fallen by something like 9000%.

Actually their quality has fallen by at least 9001% percent, AT LEAST!

I don't think the JP releases of other peoples games are really worth suggesting they had any negative impact on SE's finances - end of the day they know the games won't sell more then 5 figures and the only cost associated with these games is translation and basic shipping / manufacturing. They probably make SE a small, tidy profit as well, if SE are losing money on them they're ****ing insane.

The point is that SE's HD console release list this fiscal year was pretty much 2 games that EIDOS did most of the developement of, Nier, a game which I think exceeded expectations in Japan and was (I hope) pretty low budget and Mindjack, which we can't really judge yet.

I think the point is, it doesn't take a genius to see that the slashed forecast is primarily due to FFXIV being an utter shipwreck which has sold wayyyyyyy below expectations and generated no monthly fee revenue. The delay of Deus Ex will have hurt things too, but I don't think SE can really see that as a 'bad thing' as much as it might just be to bolster next fiscal years earnings (we'll have to wait and see if it comes out early April instead of March...).

Remember that last year,  FFXIII and Batman:AA were two of the three 'big' games that lead SE to a record year for profit and revenue.

And now I know why Secret of Mana is 8.99 dollar in the appstore... I hoped for 4.99... but I'll still buy it.. I'm a fool for supporting SE with their ports... >_>

Your profile says you've got a Wii so I would get it on the Virtual Console instead, according to XE it works out slightly cheaper.  Plus you can play it with a traditional controller, which you might prefer.

I already got it on VC.. I just can't resist having this great game on the go... it looks so sexy..  >_>

Damn you SE!! *shakes fist* but I'm actually surprised that the Secret of Mana hasn't been ported to a GBA, DS or PSP before....

I still think Square-Enix missed a massive opportunity by not porting and translating Seiken Densetsu 3 to the DS and adding in online play with friends.

Given the sales of SoM in both the US and Europe, I'm surprised the game didn't make it over here in the SNES days

Been saying it for 3 years now; SE had made the worst decisions of any publisher this gen through alienating their core audience. Yes 360 looked attractive due to the smaller install base of PS3 but they couldn't give preferencial treatment to the 360. SE has had a history of going with the frontrunner (PS1, PS2 after leaving Nintendo), but come on! Timed release of Star Ocean 4; terrible idea, the whole FF13 ordeal; could have been handled better, making Kane & Lynch 2; uncessary. Now FF14. Oh well they will learn once they hit the red!

They should really resort to pulling out some games of their biggest Ip's. FFVII spin off, Kingdom Hearts 3 and pehaps Final Fantasy XIII-2. They also need to release Versus XIII already ffs. A multiplatform release would generate some more income and Microsoft would most likely be more than willing to pay for the advertisements. The Ps3 version of Versus XIII needs no adds. My two versus videos on youtube both have way over a million views each.

I can't begin to guess how much these big HD releases with 5-7 years development time cost in development costs.
