Forums - Sony - Best Buy Shares Plunge - 3D & Internet TVs a Bust

Well what did people expect this year ?  Sales wise?

Aren't 3D tv's still around 1000$/€/£?  (minus the glasses) and how many 3D movies are their one the market?  Less than 30?  And wasn't their a big issue with 3D movie players;..'Want to watch a 3D Disney movie buy a 3D Disney player'?   I am sure I read something about it on VG...

Well I am not a specialist but people are surprised the sales of 3D tv's are not great =p?

3D in homes is too expensive right now.  That is all.

If they were same price as regular HD sets (which a lot of people still do not have) adoption rate would be far far higher.

But thats the whole point...price. The exact same 3D technology has been around for a while, and the only reason we have 3D TVs now is because these companies clued in they could charge a premium for these TVs.

If only these new 3D TVs were better than 3D displays available in 2007 and 2008. But they really aren't...just pricier.

Best Buy isn't being hammered by the immaturity of 3D TV, it's being clobbered by what Bob Marley would've called the Great Downpression. Which never ended, by the way -- here in the US, we've still got 10% unemployment, 1 in 12 mortgages are delinquent, 1 in 7 citizens are on food stamps, etc. People bought expensive HDTVs in 2004-2007 by flipping homes during the housing bubble and by running up debt, and now that game is up.

That said, true or stereoscopic 3D is definitely coming to gaming and will open up some amazing gaming experiences, but the artists are going to have to figure out how to use it properly.

I would argue that the sales indicate that these companies can't charge a premium for these TVs ...

I could be wrong but I suspect that 3DTV is being pushed at this point in time because the budget electronics manufacturers have reduced margins on typical TVs to the extent that brand name manufacturers only turn a healthy profit off of their high end products; and these high end products only sell well when there is little/no competition from similar products at a significantly lower cost. With this in mind, and the fact that these electronics companies can develop and release a new format years before their budget competition can release similar products, all of these electronics manufacturers push new formats as early as they possibly can.

While I'm excited for the 3DS, I don't really see 3D displays in their current form as offering much value when it comes to producing new content ... Certainly, an improvement in being able to understand the "depth" of what you're seeing may make it easier to navigate 3D environments but I don't see it impacting how we play games in a meaningful way.

The problem with 3D is that unless you are doing it on a 70 inch screen with THX surround sound and lights out, its not really that immresive or impressive.

Combine that with the lack of content and the locking out non hdmi 1.4 content practices by sony and rest...with the fact that TVs sell at a premium with aditional glasses at 200-300 dollars per pack...and you got yourself a product which will fail to sell.

They just need to scrap this 3D cash grab which started this year and start over...or step aside and let Nvidia, RealD and Texas Instruments DLP do it as they are the only ones doing it properly.

200-300$ per pack?

wow,u are really misinformed

no 3D glass packs are more than $150 and even those are discounted under $100

Ok, I'll take your word for it...

I won't listen to prices best buy, or amazon is charging where you can't get a single pair under a 100 or a pack under 299.

3d glasses are available on amazon for around $120 and if you go buy it with a tv or go instore, there are alot of discounts considering its christmas

samsung 3dtv with 2 pair of glasses and a movie or two were selling on amazon for under $1000 in october, considering its holiday time now,you will find many deals like this.

If you look at my original post you will see it says "200-300 dollars per pack". Pack usually means more than 1...

I just bought 2 extra viewsonic glasses last week. It was 200 dollars with shipping and it was the best deal you could find.

As far as that TV, the only 3D TV which was under 1000 bucks was a 720p 3D plasma . Look up reviews on that model and you will understand why it was so cheap. You're much better off buying a 3D mitsubishi DLP TV or 3D projector if you have 1000 bucks to spend...

This just in: Cutting Edge, Expensive Products See Disappointing Sales During Recession! Cutting Edge Cheap Products See Record Sales!

Seriously, it's like you didn't even read your own link.

It says that Best Buy lost the majority of their sales to discount outlets who sell cheaper, lesser known brands.

Well I just bought a 3D TV,  pretty happy with it too.  I know there isnt alot of content available for it yet but I think there will be.   Plus being a gamer there are plenty of 3D content coming out.  And GT5 in 3D is jaw dropping.

The only thing I am unhappy with is the glasses, they are different then the ones I used at the store despite being the same brand.  I wonder if they have different ones for Plasma and LCD TVs.  Or they may just be an old model or something.

EDIT:   It turns out I was using the rechargable ones,  makes sense why the store would use those.  I may have to buy a pair and keep the regular battery operated ones for friends/family.
