I would argue that the sales indicate that these companies can't charge a premium for these TVs ...
I could be wrong but I suspect that 3DTV is being pushed at this point in time because the budget electronics manufacturers have reduced margins on typical TVs to the extent that brand name manufacturers only turn a healthy profit off of their high end products; and these high end products only sell well when there is little/no competition from similar products at a significantly lower cost. With this in mind, and the fact that these electronics companies can develop and release a new format years before their budget competition can release similar products, all of these electronics manufacturers push new formats as early as they possibly can.
