Forums - Microsoft - The 360's weakness is now its strength

@ Zyzomys: Worldwide sales of CoD = 1.8m against 0.94m
Assassins Creed = 1.51m against 0.95m

I assume your numbers are from the US sales, but the devs look at a worldwide picture. They will see that the good games can do well, and the PS3 is doing better and better, especially in Europe

And the X360 is selling better and better in the states....Totally counteracting your argument.

Go look at the million seller chart - Xbox 360 vs PS3. Do you notice a big difference?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

@Munkeh & mrstickball

Both versions of each game are performing well on both consoles. Now shut up, both of you lol.

Anyway, Im having a slight concern about the 360's upcoming year, and what it will be like. Especially now that X07 was cancelled which was the event where they garnered much attention to newly revealed games.

My friend asked my what big games were coming out next year of the 360 and I did not know what to say. I could remember Alan Wake, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, but I couldn't think of much else. This is probably cause I don't have a 360 so haven't researched these games, but the PS3 has a much more hyped 08 lineup, you can't go anywhere without seeing something about LBP, MGS, GT4, KZ2 and the FF XIIIs

From the top of my head I can remember; Banjo & Kazooie (though not confirmed at all yet), Alan wake, Too Human, Ninja Gaiden 2, Infinite undiscovery, Lost Odyssey gets released in the states, maybe Blue Dragon 2?... there's some more. Don't own a 360 neither.

But you gotta stay aware of whats happening in the gaming world :P.

Hmm its not the library it just seems that the top games selling are FPS which is true.

Then again what games besides the violent ones have been massively selling on the ps3........(and sports games)

That's actually an interesting point, and I think that's the PS3's greatest weakness. It missed some of the PS2's target audience (casuals and RPG fans) and instead picked up very little else than the American shooter/racer/sports game crowd. A crowd who it really can't compete against the 360 for.

Just to make sure everyone is aware, this dialogue right here was my entire point in the first place. On both the PS3 and 360, the only things that are really selling are gritty, violent games, sports, and racers.

The difference is that several high profile PS3 games have been a bit more happy go lucky and kid friendly, such as Ratchet, Eye of Judgement, and even Uncharted (yes there are guns, but it's Tomb Raider level, not Gears of War), and they have underperformed.

So now, one could make the argument that Microsoft's lackluster efforts to attract the non-violent crowd (the only two major games are Blue Dragon and Viva Pinata in two years) is actually to their benefit, as they weren't going to get this crowd anyway and they might as well focus 100% of their effort on locking up the Killzone 2, Resistance, Assassin's Creed loving crowd.

Again, lots of assumptions here, just refocusing the conversation.

@rukusah and munkeh: I think part of the reason PS3 has such a great lineup for next year is that many of the hyped games were (hoped) to be released this year. MGS 4, GTA IV, Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2 and I think even LittleBigPlanet were all optimistically seen as 2007 releases at the beginning of the year.

GTA IV and Too Human are the only "2007" releases for Xbox 360 that got pushed back as far as I can recall.

There are probably many more games coming to all three systems that haven't been talked about yet.

@the original post: I think Xbox 360's game lineup was set to be different from Wii right from day one since they're targeting different demographics. Nintendo has never been strong in the violent video game department, and a system aimed at grandmas and little girls certainly isn't going to change that. Microsoft has mined the hardcore adult gamer market for a whole generation already...in fact it has arguably been mining that market for even longer on PC. But an interesting point that PS3 has failed to differentiate itself from 360 (and Wii somewhat).

@discussion about Xbox 360's lineup variety: it's definitely improving a lot compared to the original Xbox, there's no arguing that.

As Kaz Harai said at the Tokyo Game Show in response to their demographic, he said that the people who buy the Playstation products at the beginning of their products life are entirely different than the people that buy it at the end of its life. Both Xbox and Playstation concentrate on the core gamers first as they tend to spend the most money and buy the most games, then as component prices fall and development prices fall, they focus on the casuals. Nintendo just did it backward, but it doesnt mean the other 2 stopped focusing on them.

Yes all late 08 if they are lucky.........and FF 13 coming out in 08 has a what .01 percent chance (for states)

I could list all major ps3 games coming out next year, as well as 360 and wii.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

indeed, cant believe people forget games like fable 2 and huxley.

Not including the other games like cry on, left for dead, project offset and others.

Both have impressive lineups..... though ps3 has more "known" franchises coming out which makes it bigger, however the quality of both sides is still unknown.
