Yeah, but while there have been so called christians who have done terrible things (but none of them is written in the bible) the christian cross is a symbol that is recognized by everyone on the world and most people see it as a sing for help (red cross) for example.

You cant blame the faith, blame the faithful.

Jesus Christ preached love and love for our enemies, its not gods fault that many christians are violent and everyone often forgets that today still even non christians follow jesus indirectly, i mean, a present example is that 90% of the help for pakistan came from western/ (for most part) christian nations, altough pakistan is the place where many terrorists are born and where hate against westeners is preached.

There are no christian nations in the West.

Thats not true.

(see i can do that, too :P)

You can, that doesn't change reality however.

Sorry, maybe you didnt understand, with for most part christian countries, i meant, where the teachings of jesus christ have had significant influences in politics and society, and where most of the people are still christians.

And nearly every western country is (for the most part) christian then.

I hope you understand now. (i know you even did before but whatever...)

It always seems like atheists have to fight against religion especially christianity.

True christians like me dont fight against atheism, to each his own, ads like these show that these people somehow think about religion and i think deep in their heart they know that there is something after life ends, so they fight against it to forget it.

Btw, the most hounded believer (including non-believer/atheists) on the world are christians, 170 thousands are diying every year because of their faith.

And because of communism (atheism is linked close to communism) 200 million people died, so?

Live and let live, my dear friends.

wow, I can't believe you actually hate atheists so much.

First of all, an atheist can believe in life after death. So I don't know what you were saying about "atheists fight against it to forget it".

Second, Every atheist I've known never showed any glimpse of "trying to forget" life after death, because none of them believe in it, myself included(although I'm agnostic).

Third, being religious doesn't make you a better person. That is a fact. And I cringe whenever I see someone mention god to help justify a war, or people say they believe in god, yet break many rules of their own religion. In fact, the bigest atrocities I've seen in my personal life were done by religious people.

communism linked to atheism?! I never heard about that. If that happens in China, it would be because the government is forcing it. The opposite would have happened if it pushed a religion instead.

Who said that i hate atheists?

I dont hate them, i live in a country where many people in my age are atheists and still they are good friends of mine, i was atheist myself for many years. Dont make up some things that just arent true.

Ahhhhhh, i just wish i could speak english better, you misunderstood some things (no, i just "explained" them badly).

BUT communism is linked to atheism and vice versa, look at ddr, sovjetunion, china before the 80s and so on

i mean, every communist country in the past "preached" atheism and in many cases forced members of religion to become atheists or they have to die, you can again say that "its not true" but google it, if you dont believe me.

When you say "Islamic country" that implies a country where people are forced to live by Islamic law. The same could be understood when you say "Christina country". There are no "Christian countries" in the West. Only secular countries where (in theory) people can practice whatever religion they want, and (in theory) religion has no influence in the Public Sphere, as it's considered a private matter than only concerns the individual.

Also, Jesus is overrated and uninteresting.

That's just a tad absurd of a stretch, no?

And I'll echo what several others, including mrstickball and highwaystar, have mentioned already: attributing violent behaviour to any particular worldview can be superimposed to show that it happens with any belief/non-belief. Horrible things are done in the name of just about any ole damn thing.

You cant blame the faith, blame the faithful.

Well that's precisely the point. You can't blame the faith no more than you can blame lack of faith.

No need in being defensive. I'm not at all attacking any faith.

Atheist threads near christmas. Who would ever thought about it XD

Seems like, as with a lot of athiest, they missed the point. Also seems like a lot of stereo typing and attacking. Better to get people to your cause by showing them how great it is. Not attacking what someone else believes in.

The issue with atheism is that it isn't a cause.  It is a lack of belief in something.  There is nothing there, so how does one end up showing people something is superior?  What is the cause of something that is not a belief, but a lack of a belief?  Yes, one can, as a result of this lack of a belief develop other beliefs (like in rationalism, scientism, or secular humanism), but as itself, what is atheism?

More than if its offensive or not, I think its silly, I mean, one thing that bothers me about religion is how they try to convert you, and this is kinda the same but in the other way. I wouldnt  pay anything just to show other people I dont believe in god.

I think everyone can believe whatever they want, even if I consider those beliefs to be stupid, but as long as it doesnt bother me I wont care at all, I dont like these atheist associations, they make it look like a religion.

Following UK, USA and Spain, Brazil's ATEA (brazilian Association of Atheist And Agnostics) will have ads on buses in Porto Alegre eand Salvador for a month, maybe more if they can get the money.

The Association tried to do the same in São Paulo, but the bus company refused. These are the images of the four ads to be used:

Upper-left reads: In light green background: "Doesn't believe in God". In red background: "Believes in God" . On Darker green: Religion does not define character. In Yellow (same for all images): "Say no to the prejudice against atheists".

Upper right: red: "If God exists, everything is allowed."

Bottom-left: light-green: "Faith gives no answers. It just stops questions."

Bottom-right: red: "We're all atheists with other people's Gods"

So, what do you think?

Too offensive? Maybe just asking for more trouble? Or is it a good wake-up call?

It is kind of offensive (ninja'd). I've seen advertising going the other way with just as strong  a message.

In fact, the other day I was stopped by three muslims (initially one) handing out free Qurans at my University (I got mine). They asked me whether I was atheist and when I said yes they told that atheism inevitably leads to murder, and then began to reel off a list of atheist murderers and genocidal maniacs.

Now that's pretty damn offensive because I wouldn't hurt a fly, which is why I like the "Religion does not define character" sentiment of one of the adverts. But for the same reason I hate the advert that says "If God exists then everything is allowed", because that's the sentiment that offended me in the first place and it would be hypocritical of me to send that back in their direction and claim it's ok.

(Actually does anyone else think those two are mutually exclusive?)

Also, "We're all atheists to other people's gods" is so true (even though it is repeated a little too much).

Next time someone asks if your an atheist tell em to "Fu*k off and mind their own business"

Faith is permitted to be a private matter.
